An unusually intense Arctic cold outbreak has prompted the issuance of Extreme Cold Warnings across much of Florida, with conditions more typical of the Deep South or Midwest than the Sunshine State.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), dangerously low temperatures and wind chills will impact large portions of northern, central, and even southern Florida from Saturday evening through Sunday afternoon.
Meteorologists warn that hard freeze conditions, combined with strong winds, will push wind chills into the single digits above zero in several regions. In northern Florida, including areas around Jacksonville, Gainesville, and Tallahassee, overnight low temperatures are expected to fall as low as 18 to 21 degrees Fahrenheit, while wind gusts up to 40 mph will significantly worsen the cold exposure.
“This is a life-threatening cold event for a state not acclimated to prolonged freezing conditions,” the National Weather Service in Jacksonville stated in an official advisory. “Dangerously cold wind chills could cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes.”
Widespread Freeze and Wind Impacts

The extreme cold warning is accompanied by Freeze Warnings and Wind Advisories, affecting nearly all of Florida, from the Panhandle through Central Florida and into parts of Southwest Florida. Even coastal regions, which typically benefit from moderating ocean temperatures, are expected to experience hard freezes and damaging wind chills.
In east-central Florida, including Orlando, Daytona Beach, Melbourne, and surrounding communities, forecasters expect hard freeze conditions with lows near 22 degrees, combined with wind gusts reaching 50 mph in exposed areas. These conditions significantly increase the risk of downed tree limbs, scattered power outages, and hazardous travel, especially for high-profile vehicles.
Risks to People, Pets, and Infrastructure
Officials emphasize that young children, the elderly, and unhoused populations are especially vulnerable. Prolonged exposure can lead to hypothermia and frostbite, even in areas unaccustomed to winter weather. Residents are urged to check on neighbors, bring pets indoors, and avoid unnecessary outdoor exposure.
The NWS also warns that unprotected outdoor plumbing and irrigation systems may freeze and rupture, causing costly damage. Agricultural interests across Florida face potential crop losses, particularly citrus,…
