China is trying to make liquid fuel from something almost impossible to imagine: the air itself.
Instead of drilling for crude oil, a company in Shanghai has built a pilot plant that captures carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, combines it with hydrogen made from water, and uses renewable electricity to create sustainable aviation fuel. If the technology can scale, it could eventually reduce dependence on imported oil and reshape how some of the world’s hardest-to-electrify industries are powered.
