Zara Larsson Says She Could Run for Office One Day As the ‘Singing Mamdani’

Zara Larsson has the pursuit of a political career on her agenda, though it may take a couple of decades.

During an appearance on Las Culturistas on Wednesday (Oct. 7), the Swedish pop star revealed that she could see herself running for political office when she’s 50. “I can see myself going into politics,” Larsson, 28, told hosts Matt Rogers and Bowen Yang. “Like a singing Mamdani. Someone who is just for the people and who just does good things.”

Larsson clarified that she’d most likely pursue politics in Sweden, though she’s keeping her options open. And with 22 years ahead of her hypothetical 2048 campaign, Rogers and Yang shared a potential campaign slogan that nods to the title of one of her songs: “Puss Puss ’48.”

For now, Larsson is sticking to pop music, which she has an abundance to campaign on. Her 2025 album Midnight Sun reached No. 36 on the Billboard 200, while its title track climbed to No. 14 on the Billboard Hot 100. Her PinkPantheress collaboration “Stateside” also became her highest-charting Hot 100 hit, reaching No. 6.

On Las Culturistas, Larsson also made a case for keeping the Midnight Sun alive. She said she’s invested in giving “Blue Moon” its moment, even though the song isn’t currently “organically” taking off.

“I believe in this song,” she said. “I want to make a video for it. I want to go out and promote it.”

Larsson did preview the upcoming “Blue Moon” video recently, describing it as a nighttime counterpart to the world of “Midnight Sun,” with a bigger budget and a distinctly Florida-inspired feel.

If all of that weren’t enough, she may have finally found a name for her fandom. After tossing around options including “Larssonists” and “Zluts,” Rogers and Yang suggested “Gooners.” Larsson seemed to like it.

“Gooners,” she said. “I support that.”
