In “After the Rain: How Small Drops Create Big Change,” Sean Jung captivates his audience at TEDxBC Collegiate Youth by exploring the profound impact of seemingly insignificant actions. Drawing an analogy between raindrops and individual contributions, Jung illustrates how small acts of kindness and perseverance can collectively lead to monumental societal shifts. He shares compelling stories that highlight the ripple effects of kindness in communities, emphasizing that every drop counts in creating a more compassionate world. By channeling the power of collective effort, Jung inspires viewers to recognize their potential to effect change, no matter how small their actions may seem. This uplifting talk serves as a reminder that, like the rain nourishing the earth, every contribution can pave the way for a brighter tomorrow. Author Video Description

Sean opens with the Grand Canyon — carved not by disaster, but by tiny raindrops over millions of years — and South Korea’s 1997 Gold Collection Campaign, when small sacrifices helped a nation recover from the IMF Crisis. Struggling with loneliness and difficulty making friends, he began his own “social gold collection” through small acts like making eye contact and nodding while listening. His talk shows how big change comes from small, brave choices repeated again and again. My name is Sean Jung, and I enjoy exploring different areas of mathematics and discovering how math can help us understand and solve real-world problems. Outside the classroom, I enjoy playing the violin and practicing fencing, both of which have taught me discipline, focus, and perseverance.

One book that recently inspired me is Animal Farm by George Orwell. It explores the idea of animalism and shows how power can sometimes lead to unfairness and control. This helped me think more deeply about leadership, equality, and the importance of making fair choices. It also made me reflect on how important it is to speak up when something is wrong and to treat others with respect.

Using examples from nature, history, and my own personal experiences, I share how challenges can feel like “rainstorms” in our lives but they don’t last forever. I hope to encourage people to stay strong during difficult times and to keep moving forward, one small step at a time. Change is always possible.
