Andy Burnham: A Cautious Politician Without a ‘No’
In a revealing conversation on Times Radio Breakfast, former Conservative Party leader William Hague shed light on the political style of Andy Burnham, currently the Mayor of Greater Manchester. Hague characterized Burnham as a “blank piece of paper” capable of crafting any narrative he desires, yet expressed concern over the lack of a decisive stance in his career, particularly regarding fiscal responsibility.
Hague’s remarks suggest that Burnham’s political approach has largely been one of compliance when faced with requests for financial commitments. “His reputation was that he didn’t say no to people planning to spend money,” Hague noted, highlighting a significant aspect of Burnham’s governance style that could have implications for his capabilities in managing public resources.
This description raises critical questions about Burnham’s leadership and decision-making abilities. In a landscape where politicians often face competing demands for resources, the ability to say no—or at least to prioritize effectively—can be as crucial as the willingness to advocate for new initiatives. Critics argue that a politician unwilling to turn down proposals may inadvertently foster a culture of unchecked spending, potentially jeopardizing fiscal sustainability.
As Burnham continues to navigate the complex political landscape, his track record will undoubtedly be scrutinized by constituents and political analysts alike. Will his “blank slate” approach allow him the flexibility needed to adapt to changing circumstances, or will it hinder his ability to make tough choices as a leader?
Join the conversation as political analysts and citizens consider the implications of Burnham’s approach in the fast-evolving world of UK politics.

Burnham should, at least, have to stand on a soap box and sell his pitch to the PLP. Nobody knows what he intends to do – not even him. What we do know, for sure, is that the rest of the PLP are not fit to make a pitch for the post of PM.
How privileged and out of touch do you have to be to believe that devolution, proportional representation and scrapping the House of Lords are where we should be spending our parliamentary time? Kezia’s Labour claim to care about people but her list of priorities says otherwise.
Starmer going is a God send for all.
It makes you want to throw up: the usual pretence that we've had to live through for the last 2 years. An apple is an apple but lets spend another 6 months to check it isn't an orange. Call the election now.
Will Andy Burnham learn from Starmar's mistakes? I don't think so! Why? left wing people can not say no. They have a one track mind, they are right and every one else is wrong! Starmar's problem! All he needs, is good old fashioned commonsense. He could read the Chinese pylhosphorus book 'Sun Tuz' those teachings are still used to day! 'Invite your those that oppose you to your table with humility', hear their points of view, and grievances, (even those that protest in the streets), they are your people you! CONCESSIONS ARE FAR BETTER THEN CONFLICT. That can be also true in politics! It can also create unity, answers to problems, aswell as agreements. UNITY IS ALSO STRENGH.
Kezia clearly demonstrating how little real world and business experience she has.
Lived her life in a political bubble, surrounded by similarly minded people.
These are the people who have created this mess… and are not the ones to get us out of it.
Her priorities are away with the fairies.
He's Labour's Boris
Same Ego, same lack of substance, same mayor-to-pm route, same weakness of needing to be liked
Where is the Shirt lifter Hague now ??
Kezia dugdale ffs🙆🏻
The country is not in a good place. The Tories hollowed out UK industry, failed to invest in the future, sold the asset base into mainly foreign ownership, increased immigration and reduced services to the public. So, it;s rather obvious that the priority is the economy and nothing else. There needs to be a detailed plan and strategy. This needs to be explained to the country. Yes, it's an asymptote that things will get worse before they are improved. No amount of lying about sunlight uplands can change that. Without a strong economy there is nothing to defend.
That Kezia woman had a fair bit to say, but seems to think that good vibes and 'hope' is the foremost thing that is needed, Hague was kind to her on this but she really needs to shut up until she has something of substance to say.
Burnham may be able to transmit these good vibes to the cabinet, but has a much slimmer chance of transmitting this to the country , and if he did the sum total of the population's hopes add up to something impossible to deliver. Please, let's see less of these dreamers pretending to be commentators.
There is no way Burnham should have a coronation without a contest and no one knows his policies. He wasn’t even a MP until a few days ago having left in 2017 and thinks he should be handed the keys to Downing Street because a small northern town voted for him in a by election. Pathetic. He won’t last a year. He has no mandate from the electorate.
The last 3 Tory PMs were initially not chosen by the public. Only Boris was later confirmed. IT IS HOW THE SYSTEM WORKS when a PM resigns. No reason why there should be a GE now. I'm not a Labour Party member. I will have as little say in this as I did in choosing Truss or Sunak. So don't spin this into something unusual because frankly it's how we "do it" these days.
So… her solution to 2 years of Starmer making a series of empty platitudinous speeches with no substance is to have Burnham make a series of hopes and dreams speeches?!
There is a reason Mr. Hague was never trusted by the electorate, and I think part of it might just be that he believes that what Mr. Burnham said in a by-election standing against Reform, is actually what he will do when in charge.
Burnham wasn;t even elected to parliament on the current manifesto. I could understand a standing MP taking over without an election because he/she would have been part of the party that was actually elected on the manifesto but Burnham wasn't. He's been out of parliament for many years and it isn't right that he just swans back in and takes over
I give Burnham 18 months tops.
There are people in Manchester, Oldham and Rochdale who have real dirt on him.
Uk is a failed state due to woke agenda . Italy more stable.
AB’s ‘political instincts’?!! Communism you mean 😂
the welfare reform needs to be on the old. Too good for too long and the rest of the country is breaking.
Raise pension age to 68 from 5-10 years time. Bring forward that money to take over water industry, and unleash council house construction. And as for defence, our spending has prove too inefficient for too long. Sort that out!
It is all very well saying "help people buy houses" from politicians of all parties that have spectacularly failed for 30 years on housing affordability. for millions, it is way way out of reach. You want people to have families again? Build council homes they can raise families in. Either that or product polices that crash house prices to bring back affordability.
For God's Sake absolutely NO MORE of 0% interest rates! What a disastrous policy that has been!
The majority of the British electorate are prepared to "Give Andy a chance" but the honeymoon will be brief because the key is cutting welfare and few Labour backbenchers have the commonsense to go along with that. Burnham will achieve his ambition of becoming PM and also like others before him in recent years, fail in the job I suspect. When the next General Election comes, very many of the Labour MPs will lose their seats and a hung Parliament will be a likely outcome for the Country.
The public didn’t vote for Burnham ! And certainly didn’t for Starmer it was stop the Tories. The whole bunch need to go ,inadequates and idiots self interested inexperienced MPs yuk
I didn't know Hague had changed his sex, although she hides where the hair is still growing back………..
Lord Backalley will supply 10,000 Primark T-shirts
So Another Year of Labour failed policies….That will be 3 years in and no progress.
The give or take 6 months Labour will say This is now a new electoral cycle..
So vote for us again and we will try better next time..
Burn em has no political instincts.Just clime the greasy pole
ENGLAND IS ALREADY DEAD SO…
The only lesson is to understand they the parasitic elites will only give you their sly way and nothing else “wake up”
Surely the lesson is don't be a hopeless party leader like Willian Hague. 😂Talk about the blind leading the blind.
Oh joy. The press are starting to call for a general election. More drama to keep the clicks up.
Who does this clown thinks pays for all these rights. We really have the worst politicians, none of them ,especially Labour have ever run a business, or risked their own money. God help us.
Not even two years and the game is up for Starmer….Not quite a lettuce but maybe a cabbage that doesn't know his onions…
We're in for a really bumpy ride Burnham's even worse than starsi buckle up folks
Don't talk rot woman
See change how original
Kezia needs to take 10 years out of politics, get a real job, and get some experience of the real world,…as she currently speaks as someone who seems to be just another deluded and out of touch member of the political class. Come back and talk after that 10 year reality check.
The only place Ed Milliband needs to go is to the backbenches,…he's one of the most dangerous political activists in the UK and needs to be moved away from being able to affect policy. If Burnham promotes him to Chancellor, the economy and our energy bills are going to take a further, catastrophic, hit and plunge a stagnant country in to crisis.
