Bangladesh: A Nation Facing Imminent Crisis – Video

By 2050, 30% of Bangladesh will be under water. One in three inhabitants, some 60 million people, are threatened by marine flooding. No other country in the world is so at risk from rising waters. The main culprit: global warming.

In Bangladesh, a country at the frontline of climate change, rising sea levels threaten to submerge entire regions such as the Sundarbans. This documentary investigates the devastating consequences of natural disasters, displacement, and economic hardship on a population struggling to survive. It explores how climate change exacerbates social issues like the rise in child marriages, as families face the increasing cost of education and diminishing incomes. The dangers posed by floods and rising waters have made swimming lessons a necessity for children.

The film also examines the environmental impact of Bangladesh’s booming fashion and leather industries. Polluted rivers and toxic waste from tanneries endanger both the environment and public health, while workers suffer from unsafe conditions. The tragic collapse of the Rana Plaza building, which killed 1,135 garment workers, remains a stark reminder of the urgent need for reform. However, there are emerging efforts to improve factory safety and sustainability.

Finally, the documentary looks at the rise of Bangladesh’s middle class and the new challenges it faces in a country shaped by both rapid development and deep-seated inequalities.
