Bangladesh at the crossroads: Faith, youth and freedom | DW Documentary
After the authoritarian regime fell in 2024, Bangladesh is facing an important social and political decision. Which direction will it take?
It was an uprising that made international waves: In August 2024, Sheikh Hasina’s authoritarian government fell after massive Gen Z protests swept across Bangladesh. It was the end of an era – and for many, the beginning of hope for democracy. Now new elections are coming up. But the mood in the country has become more tense, and political Islam is gaining in strength. Women and minorities are coming under increasing pressure, and many see cultural freedom as being under threat.
With the upcoming elections, the country is struggling with the crucial question: What comes next? Is Bangladesh heading for even deeper polarization – or is the long-awaited transition to democracy finally on the horizon?

The woman in Saree will wear a burqa after election 😂
Same happened in Egypt. Some countries are not ready for liberal democracy as designed in the West. Egypt had to overthrow the brotherhood and install a military dictatorship with the blessing of the US. They may have to develop their own system of governance that fits their current sociocultural landscape. Not blindly copying Western architectures.

Do you know why the percentage of Hindu minorities in Bangladesh has reduced decade after decade? Have you questioned it?
islam had destroyed many countries
Wouldn't be surprised if they banned LGBT rights and equality with women… forever a poor country ran by old outdated men who are going to not live for long. Better have the energetic youth run it.
Mood has not been darkened.
The Mood is fresh and hopeful.
Be honest and positive with your documentary and reporting.
Minorities are part of Bangladesh and thire are Bangladeshi.
Some Bangladeshi are facing harder situations because of political instability in country.
Climate change could be rough on Bangladesh. Sea level rise, hurricanes and heat are coming.
What I keep thinking is that the uprising proved people can shout down power, but it didn’t prove they can replace it cleanly. The scary bit is watching frustration get converted into certainty by groups that don’t really do pluralism.

Sheikh Hasina's authoritarian government had to be ousted, but it has been disappointing how extremism has risen here after that. The interim government led by Nobel Laureate Dr Yunus has failed miserably in containing the situation. The upcoming election will be the ultimate test for Bangladesh's future but things don't look very hopeful for democracy and civil liberty.
