The Gross Reason These Fish Follow Dugongs: A Deep Dive into Blue Planet III
In the latest installment of the acclaimed series Blue Planet III, viewers are treated to a fascinating yet somewhat unsettling relationship between dugongs—often referred to as “sea cows”—and the remora fish that shadow them in the ocean. As dugongs spend up to ten hours a day tirelessly grazing on seagrass, they inadvertently create a feeding frenzy for these opportunistic fish.
Dugongs are remarkable creatures, known for their gentle disposition and herbivorous diet. Their extensive munching through seagrass meadows is not only vital for their survival but also plays an essential role in maintaining the health of marine ecosystems. However, their laborious feeding habits create an unexpected scenario: as dugongs stir up sediment and uproot seagrass, they leave behind a trail of discarded scraps and detritus. This is where remoras come into play.
These small fish have developed a unique niche by hitching a ride on the backs of dugongs. Rather than expending energy to hunt, remoras capitalize on the hard work of their larger companions. As dugongs graze, remoras feast on the nutrient-rich leftovers, including invertebrates and seagrass remnants. While this behavior may seem practical from an evolutionary standpoint, it raises eyebrows due to its rather unflattering nature—illustrating yet another layer of the intricate web of marine life.
Blue Planet III continues to unveil extraordinary and often surprising relationships in the underwater world, offering viewers a glimpse into the lives of creatures that share our oceans. The exploration of these connections not only captivates audiences but also underscores the complexities of nature and the delicate balance that sustains life beneath the waves.
As the series progresses, it will undoubtedly reveal more extraordinary stories and highlight the importance of preserving these unique ecosystems. Through the lens of expert narration by David Attenborough and stunning 4K visuals, Blue Planet III promises to enlighten and inspire a deeper appreciation for the oceans and their inhabitants.

My little one was amazed that dugongs are called sea cows and graze on seagrass for up to ten hours a day!
I just love hearing Sir David Attenborough's voice whenever he's narrating it's truly relaxing.
"gross .." oh, please. It's a precious meal time. Arguably, the best footage, exquisitely edited. Supporting actors may deserve Oscar trophy.
What’s name this animal
Bunch of freeloaders…And if you want to eat that, at least wait until the cameras are gone 🤣
Nature really is something horrible sometimes
While scuba diving, I realized I wouldn't have time to come back to shore to do my business, so I just did the same as the Dugong. As soon as I was done I realized 10 fishes were having a feast behind me.
Great episode I can’t wait for the deep ocean episode
So glad I watched this whilst eating my lunch
Trump and J.D.
2:12 : The little guy just puked 🤮
this is one of the most intelligent fish btw
THANKYOU Sir David for being my hero, idol and biggest role model…#ProtectOurPreciousPlanet…🌊🥰🌎🥰🌊
I just wish that David Attenborough narrated Prehistoric Planet: Ice Age. The show itself was a great but the narration was terrible. 😞
This is gross beyond words. I'm dead.
That one fish's reaction at 2:09… perfectly placed…! LOL Poor Dugong… can't even take a crap in peace..
One man's poop, is another's treasure
Kinky!
That’s gonna be enough internet for me today.
Recent news: manatees and dugongs are now big to giant toothless rodents close to Moeritherium, Castoroides and Castor, the extant beaver. Google: 'Moeritherium and manatees are now big beavers in the LRT'.
Well that's disgusting ☠️
I havent watched the lil vid, yet, but I assume there is poop involvd. ahahahaha
Benny: Hey Gary, it's time for us to eat!
Gary: Ooh, I'm so excited! What are we eating today?
Benny: dugong feces
Gary: …
The Steller's Sea Cow, the biggest sirenian that ever lived, is related to the dugong. How many remoras do you think it took to eat his poo?
That puffer fish was looking in absolute horror!
The wild Dewgong used gunk shot.
It doesn’t affect Remoraid.

Nature! The ultimate recycler
The remora latching on at 1:19 with that head-mounted suction cup for dead skin and parasites genuinely amazed me — and then the “main course” turned out to be dugong dung! How does something that gross end up being such a clever survival shortcut?
Went straight to the comments 😂
🤝👌🏽👍😍
I didnt know remora ate straight up logs
That's disgusting…
Dugongs feed the fishes dung. Dang!
The scientific name for the dugong is Dugong dugon.
This takes the phrase "eat shit" to a literal level
Lot's of partially digested plant matter would be very appealing to some fish!
I hope they upload the tiger shark chasing after the green sea turtle. That was tense
Ah so dugong is short for dunggong😄
The fish spitting out his food when seeing his buddy eating shit had me! 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Sea its all creatures including humans eat azz some eat poo some eat azz its all creatures😂😂😂😂😂
I have seen the only dugong kept in captivity! I would love to see one in the wild
