The newly elected premier of New Brunswick, Susan Holt, is taking a strong stance against potential tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump. With over 90 percent of the province’s exports going to the U.S., she is not willing to jeopardize this vital economic relationship. However, there is one thing she is not willing to do in order to avoid these tariffs.
In a recent statement, Holt emphasized that she will not “cut off our nose to spite our face” when it comes to dealing with tariffs. This phrase suggests that while she is committed to protecting her province’s economy, she will not take actions that could ultimately harm it in the long run. This strategic approach demonstrates Holt’s determination to navigate the complex trade landscape while safeguarding the interests of her constituents.
As tensions continue to rise over trade disputes between Canada and the U.S., Holt’s firm stance sends a clear message that she is prepared to defend her province’s interests. By refusing to make decisions that could have negative repercussions in the future, Holt is showing strong leadership and a commitment to thoughtful decision-making in the face of uncertainty.
Overall, Holt’s refusal to “cut off our nose to spite our face” highlights her dedication to finding solutions that prioritize the long-term prosperity of New Brunswick. In a time of uncertainty and upheaval in the global trade arena, her principled approach sets a strong example for leaders facing similar challenges.

What do Doug Ford and Justin Trudeau ,Chritine Freeland and Jagmeet have in common? They're all proud members of Klaus Schwabs WEF. Communism. "Treason". They are all working very hard to destroy Canada.
Kash Patel is coming for all premiers that will not cooperate
Canadians don’t want open borders or fentanyl, why is this so hard to understand. FIX THE BORDERS
Bunch of overgrown children IMO
Secure the border and there would not be any tariffs it’s not that hard.
Canada tariffs threat wouldn't put a dent on our economy compared what we can do to canada… we got 27 trillions dollars economy compared to canada 2.7 trillions economy so do the math canada….
I agree with Trump that the border needs to be fixed, but how is Americans buying more from Canada than they buy from us, considered a subsidy? We're getting goods and services for that money. Doesn't make sense.
Shut the lights down 🇨🇦 Doug Ford
We have stupid politicians in Canada.
New Brunswick. The economic engine of Canada. You stand tall, Suzie!
The problem needs to be fixed by America. As long as America gives migrants/immigrants free housing, free medical, free food, and a free education the people will keep coming even if Trump is in office. No only that, but the undocumented immigrants were given jobs by American companies.
Let's look at where the trade deficit is.
Energy?
OK US stop using so much oil and electricity and there won't be a trade deficite.
Oh, wait, they can't, so how is that our fault for supplying their need.
What is it the US makes that we need and don't make ourselves?
We have grains and meat, and we already import milk and export virtually none.
Cars are integrated.
We just have more of what they need, than they have of what we can consume.
Canadiens are beating a dead horse. President Trump is way ahead of the game ! He acts and they react, and they lose again !
The US is not worried so stop the invasion or suffer the consequences your the size of California big deal
My fellow Canadians, this is all a ruse. Statistics show this is inherently an American problem. From 2022-2023 Canadian customs seized ~500,000 kilos of illegal drugs along our entire southern border, while the Americans "only" seized ~27,000 kilos. This clearly shows us two things:
1. The flow of illegal contraband is predominately south to north, NOT north to south as Trump would have us believe and
2. Our border security is actually doing a much better job of seizing illegal drugs coming into Canada than the Americans.
This is to say nothing about the illegal guns flowing into Canada from the US which is arguably the biggest problem for Canadians and legal gun owners.
**To be clear, Trumps only motive for imposing tariffs stems from his need to pay for massive tax breaks for U.S. Billionaires. Our borders are NOT broken, but like our healthcare system, could always use a little TLC. Our goal of building a country that all Canadians can be proud of hasn't changed much since July 1, 1867. It takes hard work and patience, one brick at a time. Hope this helps, stay vigilant.
I wonder if Trump supporters understand that they have a 100% trade deficit with every store they purchase things from. If you spend $10,000 per year at your local grocery store, then you personally have a $10,000 deficit with that grocery store. Let's say you grow apples and sell $1,000 in apples to the same store every year. Now your trade deficit is lower, but it's still at $9,000. Would you consider that a subsidy? Of course not … yet Trump supporters believe Trump when he pretends that the trade deficit with Canada is a "subsidy"!
If the voters perceive this is a bad thing and want to correct it, they need to stop buying stuff made in China, start paying premium prices for goods from local manufacturers, stop importing your energy and oil from Canada (ie. no Keystone Pipeline) , and stop buying cars that are made in Mexico or other low cost markets. Of course you're going to have fewer choices and pay MUCH more for your "stuff", but if that's what you want … do it!! But don't complain about inflation or fewer options unless you're willing to work under the same conditions as they do in Mexico and China. Don't complain about the evils of EV, which would make you FAR less dependent on Canadian oil. Either Trump is blatantly lying to you (ie. because his love-affair with tariffs isn't going to lower your costs and he knows it but doesn't care about you), or he's secretly planning to have your labourers work under poor working conditions. And since he's planning the largest mass deportation ever, that means you, your kids, and your parents … the immigrants will be gone.
At risk of oversimplifying it, I see it as a simple question:
a) Cheap goods with lots of choices
b) Good wages and good working conditions for workforce
c) A positive trade balance
Choose only two. You simply cannot have three no matter how much Trump tells you that you can.
Incredible our own postal service is attacking thousands of aged seniors unable to get their social security checks from the US. They are facing starvation Doug while others in the North are unable to get their medications. I think Trump has the right idea with regards to our postal service that is losing tons of money and wants us to lose more of it. They can go pound salt
Trump Considering Privatizing Postal Service in Move That Could Cut Hundreds of Thousands of Government Jobs: Report
Story by Maryam Khanum
President-elect Donald Trump has expressed an interest in privatizing the United States Postal Service (USPS) due to its financial losses, according to a report.
At Mar-a-Lago on Saturday, Trump discussed his first-term goals of overhauling the USPS with his nominee for commerce secretary, Howard Lutnick, reported the Washington Post. The President-elect consulted a group of transition officials regarding his intended privatization of the agency, said one of three people with knowledge of the matter who spoke to the Post.
The sources also stated that Trump was allegedly against the organization receiving government subsidies, citing USPS's financial losses as reasoning.
In 2019, Trump entered a public disagreement with the USPS during his first presidential term when trying to convince the organization to hand control of some key functions over to his Treasury Department, including rate-setting, personnel decisions, labor relations and managing relationships with its largest clients.
"The government is slow, slow, slow—decades slow on adopting new ways of doing things, and there's a lot of [other] carrier services that became legal in the '70s that are doing things so much better with increased volumes and reduced costs," said Casey Mulligan, who served as a high profile economist during the first Trump administration. "We didn't finish the job in the first term, but we should finish it now."
Founded in 1775 with Benjamin Franklin as its chief, the United States Postal Service is older than the nation. In the 20th century, the service saw renewed activity and demand when it began offering free rural delivery. The agency then became financially self-sustaining later in the 20th century, aiming to "bind the nation together".
Despite modernizing its equipment and investing in new technological facilities, the Postal Service still lost $9.5 billion in the fiscal year ending Sept. 30. This is largely due to the decline of paper mail and parcel shipping times that are often slower than expected.
"The United States Postal Service is already engaged in an initiative to ensure that we can provide our customers with a high level of service to every delivery address in the nation at least six-days-a-week in an efficient and financially sustainable fashion as required by law," said the agency in a statement responding to questions regarding its potential privatization.
Doug what do you stand to lose getting into this trade war? You have a lot of lose if you do not learn how to play nice Canadians will suffer. Danielle Smith from Alberta is looking out for her province first you should do likewise
Whos is clown?
I think Trump will cut the Canadian oil first and start his drill baby drill right away
Please fight for Canada first! Enough already!
Lets let it play out. Reality bites harder than talk. Canada also has another problem. If America wanted to stop the nonsense once and for all, how hard would it be for them to take Canada over? Hope Canada has been investing in their actual sovereign defense with all the money they have NOT been using to fulfill their obligation to NATO.
Lets play some hardball , I think Canada will collapse in short order then we can buy your stuff at half off in June
The US is 10 times bigger than Canada so it makes sense they would need more, especially our critical minerals, raw materials, oil, gas, clean electricity, water … It's the USMCA trade agreement, which that Tsar-elect Troll had a hand in, working well for both countries. I recall Freeland being intensely disliked by Trump because she pushed hard for Canadian interests and succeeded. Do it AGAIN Chrystia! This creep just likes to distort facts and create chaos to worry everyone into jumping to appease him. He will only back down if Canada and ALL our provinces stand together and push back. Trump is vile and needs a taste of his own venom.
Fix the borders and drugs , and won’t be issue
American make your own electricity , invest in your own nation, generate jobs and wealth locally
4 years Go, when Trump slapped tarffis on China, all the USA allies followed, because they feel they need to stand together with USA, now I see Trump saying he will slap tarffis on His allies as well, even if it's not the same amount as China .I just feel that now you know how it feels to be on the Receiving end..
Next you will know 50% tariffs are coming
Canadian government needs to add a trump tax on all cross border goods and services. Trump international tax. TIT.
Good for the newly elected premier of New Brunswick.
Reference: Keb Mo “put a woman in charge”. Trumpists seem to have no idea who they’re dealing with. 😖😖😖👍👍👍
Cancel all contracts with the usa they get our resources for a huge discount .Canada would /could do a lot better selling to another country at a fair price and they would appreciate it and with no disrespect!
It’s not complicated. Trump isn’t asking y’all for much. Just take care of your border and move on to sipping your syrup. They talk like he’s asking for the first born daughters of the nation. This is something you should be doing anyway. Smh.
Boycott American goods. I'll buy Canadian products first.
The USA Doesn’t Subsidize Canada. Why don’t Canada’s reporters fact check the narcissistic liar and make that fact clear!!!!
Holt is a joke.. new Brunswick election was just a vote to get rid of Higgs.
