Title: Unveiling Iran’s Shadow Oil Fleet: A Challenge for U.S. Sanctions
In a world increasingly defined by economic sanctions and geopolitical maneuvering, Iran’s shadow oil fleet stands as a testament to the resilience of illicit trade. Despite stringent U.S. sanctions aimed at crippling the Islamic Republic’s oil revenues, the nation has managed to maintain its foothold in the global oil market through a network of aging tankers that operate largely under the radar.
A recent video by The Wall Street Journal featuring journalist Jon Emont sheds light on how this formidable evasion network continues to thrive. Emont explains that these vessels, often referred to as “ghost ships,” employ an array of deceptive tactics to elude detection and circumvent sanctions. A significant element of their strategy includes disabling tracking systems, which enables them to navigate Southeast Asia’s busiest shipping routes without raising alarms.
At the heart of this intricate operation are ship-to-ship transfers, a method frequently employed by these clandestine vessels. By rendezvousing at sea, tankers can exchange cargo, effectively disguising the origin of the oil before it reaches buyers. This tactic not only complicates efforts by authorities to trace the oil back to Iran but also allows the network to operate with relative impunity.
The challenge for U.S. authorities is manifold. Emont’s report raises critical questions about the effectiveness of the ongoing blockade aimed at stifling Iran’s oil exports. Are these sanctions sufficient, or are they being undermined by an ever-evolving web of evasion tactics? With the complexities of navigating international waters and the adaptability of Iran’s operations, enforcing these economic measures poses a daunting challenge.
As this shadow fleet continues to operate, the stakes are high—not just for the U.S., but for global oil markets and geopolitical stability. The ability of Iran to sustain its oil trade through such clever maneuvering underlines the intricate dance of sanctions and evasion that characterizes contemporary international relations.
The video invites viewers to consider not only the tactics of the shadow fleet but also the broader implications of such operations. As the U.S. grapples with these ongoing challenges, the persistence of Iran’s clandestine oil trade serves as a stark reminder of the limitations of sanctions in a complex global landscape.

So how those ships are able to slip through the blockade ?

Iran can do whatever it wants with its oil.
Good for Iran and china
Mine Iran's oil depots. Mine Kharg Island.
So just selling your own oil to others is brazen for u yankees
The sanction is only US sanction how stupid people on board with US when they have to pay more for something can be cheapest.
US is dictator country with terorist on its government.
Good grief Charlie Brown!!! There's a whole shadow fleet of these things out there!!!
Time for a multipolar world, the US just follow israel commands blindly which in near term will destroy itself, that's what israel plan
So United States make the laws for the world😮😮😮
Your country is the one who attack Iran
you murdered their leaders and their scientists…
Useless news this news make no sense
Show India's Correct map and why are you showing Tibet as a part of China ? It's a free nation
Perhaps the solution is for the USA to stop unilaterally sanctioning countries around the world. That way those countries could operate and trade following the trade and maritime rules. But since international rules seem not to apply to USA, they have no other alternative.
hate to tell you but the usa has no authority…. people used to respect the usa but thats long gone now.
Really crazy to think all this “very dangerous” crude oil trading wouldn’t be a thing at all if US didn’t impose unilateral sanctions on Iran in the first place.
I am an American, and while I was young, I thought US sanctions were supposed to protect the world from evil doers. Now that I have grown up, seen the world, and the reality of it, US Sanctions are not some noble tool to make the world better. It is a powerful country bullying others to bend to its will, often with very harmful goals. The USA could be a hero; instead, it is not just a villain, but the worst kind of villain: A villain that calls itself a hero.
Imagine in the future, if US loose global power and China place similar restriction for US just because they don't like US
WSJ claiming illegality of flouting sanctions (unilaterally imposed by the US) while the US illegally attacks Iran. The best of partisan journalism right here
Stop talking about phantoms, you sound like a 5 year old. Iran and Russia have the right to sell oil to whom they wish, any country trying to be the dictator of the world will fail. "Freedom of navigation"?
Nothing wrong with that
kijaan budak bukit bung la tu
Americans sanction murders millions of innocent lives. Why can't Iran sell oil. Americans have blood on their hands.
Interesting. Anyway, it is not clear the main point. How can Iranian navy exist from the strait with the blockade
In light of attacks shadow is one way of trade
Shadow fleets or not US is not in any position to lecture about morality and democracy after they failed to punish Epstein class for their atrocities, and military leadership for bombing hospitals and schools in Iran for 10 consecutive days . Iran has the right to sell their natural resources to whoever they want . American meddling in foreign country and their energy security is crystal clear violation of International non interference laws set by UN.
Converge by 5 on the usa by ghost global and begin bombardment pending us military involvement pending proper execution ediqute.should they begin their fall back as a uniformed order execute Innocence.ignsa
Should Mexico or Canada object begin ae poe.ignsa
Iranians have the right to defend itself against western Sanctions.
This is like what Nick cage was doing in lord of war
How did video conveniently omit the part where the Epstein army attacked Iran first, assassinated its leaders, killed thousands of civilians? If anything, other nations and the UN should be blockading US and Israel trades and put sanctions on both countries, not the other way around.
I’m a Chinese. Good job to those ships! F the US sanctions.
I see no problems ✅
US can't dictate whole world. While seazing venezuala oil. US is a thief state.
