China in flux – Between career, love and tradition | DW Documentary
Three young women from China are struggling to realize their dreams. While Chinese society is undergoing profound change, they are simultaneously feeling the social pressure to start a family and have children.
China has developed at record speed to become one of the most modern countries in the world. The documentary follows three young, single women between 2016 and 2023. Amber, Jingya and Tingting try to achieve their goals in very different ways – in their careers, as well as in love.
All three women were born in the 1980s – at a time when China’s rulers were trying to control population growth with the one-child policy. On the one hand, this enabled many girls to receive a good education, as well as to spend time abroad. On the other, women still find themselves confronted with the expectation that they will marry and have children. In China, having children is considered the best form of provision for a person’s retirement. The Chinese state is also concerned about falling birth rates; a development that’s both a trigger and a challenge for young women in China.
While Tingting pursues her own path in China, despite family expectations and social norms, Amber and Jingya are drawn to Europe – independently of one another – in search of a better life. But can Europe really fulfil their dreams?

Very good film❤
This was very interesting! Very intimate look into their lives
Ah, poor people – their life revolving around the goal of getting married. 🙄I've freed myself a long time ago from societal expectations. My relatives have largely left me in peace already and don't bother me; they've accepted my choices of being single with no children. I focus on my personal development, short-term and long-term plans, and goals. I help people around me have a better life as well. But I do have a sister and cousins. I can understand the Chinese women born in the 1980s during the single child policy, with no siblings and no cousins..
Not all the English was easy to understand. Please add (human written) subtitles next time.
Unfortunately the so called modern society doesn't bring the happiness and life quality we assumed it would bring. Mycadvice for all young people is don't go the way of hustle culture and consumerism, regardless of you place in the world. If possible, live close to nature and produce something edible. Never leave your loved ones for a career or money, it isn't worth it.
DW,
Kindly include full original English subtitles. NOT auto-generated subtitles.
Good treatment of such complexities
In China I’ve seen videos of people paying to look employed, are people gonna pay to stage birth?💀💀
Don't marry. The most common form of violence is domestic violence 😢. We need unconditional right to stop our own lives.
🙆♀️🤦♀️
There’s a research on high lung cancer stats of Asian woman, culture related?
Europe is in flux: lack of ambition, innovation and war.
