China is testing a completely different way to keep things cold—and it could eventually change how refrigerators, electronics, and cooling systems work.
Researchers at the Chinese Academy of Sciences are developing magnetic refrigeration technology that moves heat using magnetocaloric materials instead of relying on the traditional refrigerant loop found in refrigerators and air conditioners. Their newest approach replaces one of the biggest limitations of earlier magnetic cooling systems: the fluid used to transfer heat.
