Storm Warnings now cover a massive stretch of the Atlantic east of New England and the Mid-Atlantic. A developing nor’easter is driving the dangerous seas.
The NWS Ocean Prediction Center posted the warnings for waters from south of Georges Bank down to the Baltimore Canyon. Seas could build to 25 feet at the peak.
Where the Warnings Stretch
Six separate zones are under Storm Warnings. They cover offshore waters from south of New England down through the Baltimore Canyon area, generally 60 to 250 nautical miles out.
Georges Bank sits at the northern edge of the warning area. The zone south of Montauk Point and the Great South Channel is included too, along with waters east of 69 West longitude.
Peak Conditions: Wednesday Night Into Friday
Northeast winds of 35 to 50 knots are expected across most zones. That’s roughly 40 to 58 mph, strong enough to be dangerous for any vessel caught offshore.
Seas will build right alongside the wind. Several zones show significant wave heights reaching 24 to 25 feet Thursday night into Friday, with individual waves potentially twice that height.
The Baltimore Canyon zone sees some of the highest numbers. Forecasters call for 19 to 25 foot seas Thursday through Thursday night, with winds gusting near 50 knots.
Coastal Impacts Building Toward the Weekend
This isn’t just a problem for ships far offshore. The same system is expected to bring coastal impacts to New England as it strengthens.
NWS Boston is already watching the pattern closely. Rain, strong wind gusts, and coastal flooding are all possible Friday through Sunday as the storm takes shape closer to shore.
What Mariners and Coastal Residents Should Do
Mariners should avoid these waters entirely through Friday. Storm-force winds and seas near 25 feet are dangerous even for large vessels.
Anyone with plans on the water this week should check the latest Offshore Waters Forecast before heading out. Conditions are expected to improve gradually over the weekend as winds shift out of the west.
