From 0 to 9 – The mysterious origins of our numbers | DW Documentary
Why do people in Europe refer to them as “Arabic numerals” when they were invented in India? How could ten tiny symbols conquer the world? And how did zero change the course of history?
The Western world calls them “Arabic numerals,” while in the Arab world, today’s European notation is thought of as being Western. What is “Arabic” about the symbols that traveled from India to Europe and on to the rest of the world?
Following the trail of our numbers leads us to Baghdad. There, in the eighth century, a scholar named al-Khwarizmi — Latinized as “Algorismi,” later to be found in the word “algorithm” — helped spread Indian numerals. He would become known as the father of modern algebra. The “Arabic” numerals commonly used in Europe today derive from another variant, known as “Ghubar” — Arabic for “dust.” That had emerged from the so-called “dust tables” used by Maghrebi merchants around the Mediterranean.
From Europe to America, and from the dawn of modern science to the computer age — the fascinating history of these ten small digits is enmeshed with the stories of the people who invented, spread, adopted, imposed and scrutinized them. Little by little, they have permeated every area of our lives. With the computer, numbers became the code of the modern age — and the only truly universal language.

The numeric system we use today is highly flawed and extremely limited. Examples: Software developers run into limitations when expressing bases beyond base 10 and end up having to use the alphabet to represent missing symbols (e.g. hexadecimal uses 0-9 and A-F). Fractions have error terms that can extend to infinity. Pi is an irrational number. Asymptotic formulae have no valid solutions in the number system. Infinity cannot be represented using numbers. Complex/Imaginary numbers exist. Quantum mechanics is incompatible. In short, our entire society makes assumptions that aren't true and are based entirely around a highly flawed numeric system. If we ever hope to leave Earth and explore the universe, we will first need to develop a numbering system that makes sense.
And today, Trump wants to bomb Iran into oblivion.
Very thank you DW, to feature this topic in the documentary.
An all time Excellent documentary ✨.
In Georgian Language we read 34 as 20 and 14.
The Arabic numbers 1235567890 have nothing to do with Indians , completely different from the shape of the Indian numbers, as shown in the first video, and the number zero is 0, an Arabic word, not an Indian word, and it spread in the world from the Arabic word, even the Indians use the Arabic name to zero
Since long time I am thinking why the name Arabic Numerals.. now I knew that they are from my country India .. many thanks DW .. 😊
Interesting how paper made calculations easier to check and helped spread the numerals.
Very informative documentory.. thankyou DW
Although, I am an Indian, what surprises me how Akkadians, Sumerians and Mesopotamian people were doing their math!!!
Math is a global language, so, no language or border can divide it.
Respect to Gupta Empire who brought their Gupta numerals which developed into what we say as Hindu numerals.
Europeans, Arabs, Chinese, Mayans, Egyptians, everyone did their part to math and the world still is, let's appreciate everyone.
Let's heal the world with unity, love, equality and blessings and not arrogance or pride.
One of the greatest Mathematician Pierre-Simon Laplace said this:
"It is India that gave us the ingenious method of expressing all numbers by means of ten symbols, each symbol receiving a value of position as well as an absolute value; a profound and important idea which appears so simple to us now that we ignore its true merit. But its very simplicity and the great ease which it has lent to computations put our arithmetic in the first rank of useful inventions; and we shall appreciate the grandeur of the achievement the more when we remember that it escaped the genius of Archimedes and Apollonius, two of the greatest men produced by antiquity."
For DW, there are two groups of reporters.
One makes documentaries which is awesome, others for general current affairs is pure BS like pay money and we report as you wish.
Nice documentary ❤
The Roman numerals are so impractical. Surprised they stayed in use for so long.
interesting content
please make a documentary on history of Kashmir
