Global National: Aug. 22, 2025 | Carney Dropping US Tariffs Under CUSMA: A One-Sided Bargain?
In a significant shift of trade policy, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has announced the removal of various retaliatory tariffs on U.S. goods under the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA). This move, hailed by some as a strategic olive branch to rekindle stalled trade negotiations, is drawing mixed reactions from the public and business communities alike. Carney campaigned vigorously against U.S. tariffs, positioning himself as a leader ready to confront President Donald Trump’s protectionist measures. Now, as he lifts tariffs without a clear concession from the U.S., questions arise about the integrity and effectiveness of this diplomatic maneuver.
The lifting of tariffs is designed to alleviate economic pressures faced by Canadian businesses impacted by the ongoing trade dispute. Supporters argue that the decision will foster a more stable trading environment, which is crucial for both industries and consumers as they recover from the economic strains of recent years. However, critics express skepticism, asserting that this approach may merely reinforce the perception that Canada is ceding ground in what many consider a lopsided negotiation. As Mackenzie Gray reports, the lack of reciprocal actions from the U.S. raises concerns regarding the long-term viability of this strategy, prompting calls for a reassessment of Canada’s position on trade relations.
Amid these developments, the global community faces pressing humanitarian crises, including a newly declared famine in Gaza City, where over half a million people are now at risk of starvation, as reported by Redmon Shannon. This grim reality starkly contrasts the economic discussions taking center stage in Canada and emphasizes the delicate balance between international diplomacy and pressing human rights issues.
In a surprising turn of events in the realm of science, a recent archaeological discovery is challenging established notions about early human evolution. A fossilized child skeleton, uncovered and dating back 140,000 years, exhibits features of both Homo sapiens and Neanderthals—suggesting that these two groups may have interacted far earlier than previously thought. Eric Sorensen delves into the implications of this finding, providing a fresh perspective on the complexities of human ancestry and the interconnectedness of ancient populations.
As Canada navigates its trade policy landscape, the outcomes of Prime Minister Carney’s decision to drop U.S. tariffs will undoubtedly influence not only Canadian businesses but also the broader geopolitical dynamics of North America. The ongoing discourse surrounding this strategy underscores the challenges of balancing economic interests with national sovereignty and the commitment to equitable trade relationships.

OUTRIGHT LIE???
WHO'S LYING???
All the false bravado really paid off, love being poorer
How about offering incentives on US products? What a joke!
We were threatened by Putin that's why he dropped them.
People please control yourselves, remember what's really important is that Quebec dairy farmers are still happy and at the end of the day that's all that really matters to Mr. Carney and the Liberal supporters. Canadians that have/will lose their jobs don't matter what-so-ever. Quebec dairy farmers can sleep well knowing that their 200%-300% tariffs are still intact.
51 🇺🇸
More liberal failure from a snake of a "PM". Elbows up LMFAO
joke
CUSMA items and lowest tariffs in the world plus we hold up the retaliation tariffs is good. You cried no deals and blamed Carney and then you cry when he makes a deal …. We can still keep elbows up regardless of him publicly saying elbows down … that’s fine!!
OMG, I forgot Crowfoot is back 😂
lol hahaha elbows up. More like bend the knee.. time after time.
Tarifs on American products, why would we want to pay higher prices? Thank you Prime Minister for being the adult in the room.
What did Trump let go? I knew Carney had no backbone & would let us down
Elbows up crowd now projectile vomiting.
Too many important decisions based on emotion, fluff and grandiose promises.
Canada accounts for 1% of the entire US economy… they account for over 20% of ours. People need to get a grip with reality and realise that Canada has no sway, influence or power in any form of fight with the largest economy on the planet.
As a company that imports, I know that I will have to increase my prices to cover increase tariffs.
I guess Canada’s Winston Churchill turned out to be Canada’s Neville Chamberlain.
Big thanks to everyone that voted for him. It’s really worth having the country stay on the same trajectory of decay that it has for the past decade just to watch ‘elbows up’ Carney completely cave to Trump at every turn. Bang up job libs, my kids’ futures thank you.
It doesn't matter what the retaliatory tariff is or is not. No real Canadian will buy anything from the USA anymore.
Makes me sick. We had our chance. And let the pooch screw us. AGAIN We never learn.
Cheeks up, Canada! Us Republicans looooove that we get to bargain with a wimpy Liberal 😂😂😂

Rolls over better than a dog and doesn't get a treat for it either.
Enough with these hockey metaphors, already! No matter how much you keep putting this former banker on a pedestal, he does not have the power to compel the USA to do anything.
better join BRICS NO ONE IN Nato or g7 cares about canada except to use it for their own good.
Canada / Mark Carney running with its tail tucked between its legs & it's belly showing. Why not just give in & be the 1st colony of the Good US of A???!! We'll be another Ukraine. Canadian politician don't need to do a job well. They just need your vote!!!
You put such a positive spin on the failures of the Liberals, congratulations on contributing to the destruction Of Canada, like all other western countries.
Canada has dropped only the retaliatory tariffs on items that are covered by CUSMA. Carney did the right thing to indicate that Canada will not stoop to the same low level as Trump in this trade war. Canada's withdrawal shows the rest of the world that Canada intends to play fair. This is not a win for Trump, although it may look like a win to the MAGA cult and that's all that Trump really cares about. Carney is playing the long game and he's playing it smart. That's the opinion of this life long Canadian card carrying Conservative.
Elbows up, knees down, mouth open
Elbows up friends don't let this make you think it is ok to buy American . We cant let Trump use us
