Global National: June 25, 2025 – Canada’s Defence Spending Dilemma
In a pivotal moment for international relations and national security, members of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), including Canada, have collectively agreed to ramp up their defence budgets to a staggering five percent of their respective GDPs by the year 2035. For Canada, this agreement translates to an astronomical annual expenditure of approximately $150 billion. Prime Minister Mark Carney is at the forefront, tasked with the monumental challenge of navigating both political and economic landscapes to meet this ambitious target.
The ramifications of this policy shift are profound, raising critical questions about funding sources and priorities. As Canada grapples with its fiscal responsibilities, citizens are left to ponder the implications: how will this commitment to NATO affect domestic spending on healthcare, education, and infrastructure? Will increased defense expenditures come at the cost of essential public services?
Mackenzie Gray delves into the details, exploring strategies that the Prime Minister and his administration may employ to fulfill these NATO obligations. Options may include reallocating existing resources, hiking taxes, or even increasing national debt, all of which could spark robust debates within Parliament and among the public. Gray highlights the urgency of crafting a transparent plan that addresses both the necessities of national defense and the socio-economic wellbeing of Canadians.
As discussions around this milestone defense target unfold, the stakes are high. The consensus among NATO allies signals a shifting global paradigm, urging nations to reassess their military readiness in the face of emerging threats. For Canada, the road ahead will not only define its role within NATO but will also significantly shape its national identity and fiscal future. As citizens contemplate these developments, one thing becomes clear: the path to fulfilling NATO’s new defense spending target is fraught with complexity and implications that extend well beyond military ambitions.

War only makes the 1% richer and for the rest of the world we help them get richer. We are truly no safer.
In MHO. Lets all just be honest.💬
Daddy chillll
That's why people are leaving Canada so they don't get taxed to death.
They will take from us , where else will they get it
So long as we're spending most of it within Canada (e.g., manufacturing our own military weapons and vehicles), and the revenue coming from increasing taxes on to top 1%, then I have no problems with it.
Carney will say and do anything to make as many people happy in hopes of gaining a majority.
If you’re reading this, Carney has you fooled hook, line and sinker.
Stop subsidizing breeders that are have 7 kids in this country they cant support, and we will be good
How about the government quit money laundering, or quit taxing people into oblivion then sending that money to a foreign private entity based in England called the Canada Revenue Agency. Might be a place to start.
Sounds like a lot of foreign bots against western countries getting their defensive capabilities back on track
Increase visa application fees to Canada, increase PR application fee, and also increase the citizenship application fees.
3:17 "Into the next decade" Boomers win again.
How much you spend on those bunker busters you ready gave to Isreal ( not an allie) smh.
Here's the perfect liberal strategy to make money : make more people lose their jobs to lower gdp. It isnfool proof
Rutte's blatant pandering to Trump's insecurities makes me want to vomit. How sad it took an in incompetent sociopath to finally force Canada to meet our NATO commitments.
Nato is in place to stop wars. They stop nothing.
The money should come from all the money the Liberals flushed down the toilet on Battery EV plants that went bust along with the cricket farms that the Liberals wasted our money on. Never mind the endless slush funds like the “green” that there is no accountability. Billions wasted and nothing to show! Then fools elected them again and they give themselves a raise! How about a reduction to 150k and then tie any increase to an increase in the GDP. That way if the economy is doing bad then they make less! And absolutely no money should leave Canada if we do not have a balanced budget, and every Canadian has a home and food on the table!
How? From Liberal's wallet and Marky's pocket of course… No? Hahahaha!
"And daddy sometimes has to use strong language, hahahahahaha."💪✊👊😂
Stop all the handouts to the 100’s of thousands of immigrants liberals have brought into Canada against Canadians will.
'Having to sacrifice'….. That's not what I heard. I heard infrastructure, jobs, Canadian procurement, raise in pay, bulk purchases with Europe.
I heard a good plan. Get on board people.
Alberta will just pay for all these 😂. It's nothing new the west is always the one that must pay for Canada 😢
Obviously it's going to come out of healthcare, education, infrastructure, every single thing that contributes to human happiness and wellbeing.
We still don't know where those "missing" billions of the Infrastructure Fund went.
We still don't know anything about the Green Slush Fund corruption.
Alberta will foot the bill as usual
It's all a ruse, just like the co2 emissions targets we keep missing. By the time 2029 and 2035 roll around, tRump will not be in power and no country will be spending the 5%
How about stop paying 81,000 per year for refugees we can’t take. Just an idea.
Why do all these people have such big ears
NATO is so outdated. Talk to France and let’s withdrawal from it!
spend them in canada – but no – american national security – must spend in america – it's a protection racket – and because of washington , all nato countries are fair game
Maybe if the politician stop taking it .
So canada " PM took 40 millions from the bank of england and he is going to help canada.lollllllll
American Federal Law overrules American State Law, so I will still stay away from the States until their Feds become much more Canadian friendly.
How will we pay for it? Stop handing out thousands to refugees. With what we spend on one refugee a month you could equip a solder.
You know it's getting out of hand when refugees are complaining about the amount of refugees we have.
Can wait till carney makes a draft for the army, then all Canada will be secure right, and maybe a liberal won’t be so scared of a firearm
So, it actually costs us by NATO's imaginary threats. Time to withdraw from this trouble making gangster organization.
Tax me more daddy
Print money raise taxes, produce nothing.
Free canada from the USA 🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦
Thanks liberals
Lies lies lies
Canada should’ve created those mining jobs years ago or started drilling the massive oil reserves we’ve been sitting on. It’s pathetic how badly this country has been mismanaged. We could’ve stayed a strong, self-sufficient nation — like in the ‘70s when one income could support a family and buy a home. The Liberal party has destroyed that reality. Now with out-of-control immigration and weak leadership, we’re watching Canada spiral into a mess like Venezuela. It’s infuriating.
Taxes…duh
Maybe by not sending money to Ukraine.
Starting with the rate earth mineral comment, it's clear that Carney wishes to rephrase investments in various infrastructure projects such as pipelines, rail, ports and indeed investment in rare earth minerals as military expenses. Hence updating air traffic control contributes to the NATO 5%, maybe investing in companies that produce military rations will count as military expenditures so canned food in retort bags might be part of the contribution. How far he can swing this will be interesting to see. Of course the money will have to come from cuts, debt or taxes but obviously accounting gymnastics is the intent to cover most of it.
Mind you, the infrastructure investments also needs to come from somewhere…
Easy lol print more money and consider it a tax write off lol the us does it all the time, works like a charm.
"Daddy"? That was cringe
Lmao 😂 Canada should’ve done this decades ago before Trudeau screwed up the country’s economy. 1% is abysmal considering the bare minimum is 2%….No more hiding behind big bro US, start spending your part or get out of NATO.
