Gothic architecture – When cathedrals reached up to the heavens | DW Documentary
Gothic architecture emerged in France in the 12th century. This architectural style revolutionized church construction, creating cathedrals that soared skywards. But where did the knowledge and technology for building these monuments come from?
Light floods the interiors of Gothic cathedrals, which have colorful windows instead of solid walls. All told, the windows of Chartres Cathedral in France would cover an area larger than a football pitch. Another impressive example is St. Stephen’s Cathedral in Vienna, Austria, the federal capital’s iconic landmark.
This documentary attempts to unravel the mysteries and secrets of Gothic architecture. Ribbed vaults, pointed arches and flying buttresses became integral elements of the Gothic style. The mysticism of light inspired architects to install large windows that illuminated the interior and made visiting cathedrals a truly enlightening experience. Robust Romanesque construction gives way to the graceful, soaring architectural elements of Gothic style. What secrets lie in the statics of the elongated columns, struts and pillars?
The answers can be found in this documentary, which features experts like Barbara Schock-Werner, former master builder of Cologne Cathedral.
The film also traces the lives of famous Gothic architects. They were universal geniuses, masters of architecture but also of physics, mathematics and chemistry. They kept their knowledge a closely guarded secret to maintain their monopoly and professional status.

Nature acts as a living, sacred sanctuary where trees, birds, and water serve as priests and altars, fostering connection, reflection, and spiritual grounding😂
So wasthe story of the Masons in any way true?
All built by human hands..beautiful
Gothic is a lie. Tartaria yo
Once again, DW offers us another outstanding documentary of superb quality. The history, re-enactment,the stunning filming and brilliant narration provides the viewer with a complete and mesmerizing overview of the complex requirements to build a Gothic cathedral.
Very satisfying and wonderfully informative – many, many thanks 🙂
Just beautiful! I love this so much more than modern architecture and the brutalist architecture. This was stunning.
Modern technology cannot built such beautiful structures
Beautiful tribute to humanity and the astounding things we are capable of crafating.
A broken leg is serious injury.
Only one we building these days that could match this majestic beauty is La sagrada Familia, Barcellona even though disign is from old days
They are genius❤
Nothing mysterious about it
My favourite architectural style, It truly takes your breath away, Will this style ever make a come back!!
DW is very anti Christian and anti Catholic so I’m intrigued but very sceptical…… lets see
fck the pyramids, a bunch of jenga blocks that 130 men had to pull each block to its destination and haul it up platform by platform till they got to the top. CATHEDRALS are so much more impressive than Pyramids.
The story of young boys learning a trade and joining a guild is especially interesting ~ Medieval life really becomes engaging and understandable. We should periodically memorialize all the good souls over the centuries who built the world we so cherish now. What heritage will we the living leave the future?
As an engineer, I imagine building such complex structures without any modern equipment like cars, cranes, and other machines or even computers for architectural and structural design, and their their work still stands up to today! People of the ancient world were magnificent 👌
Well done! I love seeing such a well produced, human made product
Reinventing what the Romans did 800 years earlier. But unable to reinvent concrete for another 400 years.
We aren’t smarter or more talented than our ancestors. We just have more technology to help us solve the problems they solved without it.
Imagine, these grand, intricate & complex masterpieces were when most people were still living in mud/wooded hutments..simultaneously Europe was undergoing social, political, cultural n renaissance upheavals, makes All the more Surreal
Religion is the cause of all evil – Regardless of their magnificent churches ..who where build to high standards because the builders were taught to fear God's wrath if they delivered second rate workmanship
I live a stone’s throw from York Minster, one of the largest Gothic cathedrals. I go inside to hear concerts a couple of times a year, and the sheer size of the place never fails to take my breath away
I'm a Muslim from Kosovo, however while being a computer engineer, architecture has always made me question the quality of modern engineering.
I have almost completed visiting every significant gothic architecture in Europe and I absolutely love churches, I love staring at their beauty and admiring the architecture… I wonder why can't we built such lasting pieces of architecture
Too much irritating music. Had to turn off after a few minutes.
Great work thank you 🔥
Please create a documentary on La Cathédrale Saint Pierre of Beauvais, the great, flawed, incomplete cathedral. Probably the finest.
most important aspect DW doesnt want us to know: in this period it was made impossible for the rich to corner their earned money for long time. you could earn as much as possible, but you had to spend this money. so there was much money invested in all different things, also in cathedrals.
What a documentary <3 thank you
Excellent narative voices with stunning filming on details of human's great "Gothic" stylish architecture. Thanks with enjoyment.
Bringing back the History of Architecture. Fascinating.
