“Green colonialism” – How nature conservation harms indigenous peoples | DW Documentary
A win for wildlife, a loss for humans. African nature reserves are restricting indigenous peoples’ access to rivers and forests — and, in doing so, are endangering their very existence.
In the name of protecting rhinos, lions and gorillas, Africa’s governments are handing over control of ever-larger swathes of land to NGOs such as the WWF, African Parks or the Northern Rangelands Trust — to the detriment of local indigenous populations.
At first glance, Africa’s wildlife conservation efforts look to be a good thing. The problem is: The new nature reserves systematically restrict indigenous peoples’ access to rivers and forests. That’s led environmental activists and advocates for indigenous communities to denounce what they see as a new “green colonialism”. They criticize the commercial and militarized administration of nature — in particular, the growing trade in carbon emissions credits for land long used by indigenous communities.
In Rwanda, Kenya and the Republic of the Congo, our reporter met members of communities who are now considered to be a threat to the natural environment, even though their ancestors have shared the land with wildlife here for centuries. To this day, these indigenous peoples live from small game and wild honey, or from the milk and meat of their cattle. Restrictions make it increasingly difficult for them to lead their traditional lifestyles, yet the wildlife preserves afford them few new job opportunities.

We ARE NATURE harm to the environment is harm to ALL people. this is indigenous philosophy. don't blame conservation because of corrupt individuals within certain orgs. this title is harmful
The Niassa Lion Foundation is a good example of using privilege and power the right way to fundraise for a "green" cause which is actually a cause for life and quality of life (or should be). Colleen Begg and the locals and other foreigners involved in making Niassa Lion Foundation work genuinely really worked together with people first causes. Everything was voted on by the communities impacted, and nothing was done without community buy-in. The Wildlife Conservation Network has videos up for their annual expos where Dr. Colleen Begg gives updates on how the organization has progressed and developed, and how the organization was handed over entirely to locals after the infrastructure was developed to a certain point AS WAS ALWAYS THE PLAN. This exactly type of program doesn't work everywhere (the program was different for different communities because of what the difference between what communities needed, wanted, and ultimately decided, but the principles of community buy-in, working synergistically with the cultures and values within a community, and making sure that the solutions are people-first so they are sustainable and integrated into the future, present, and the past. If anyone has similar stories, orgs, or people to check out, I'd love to hear about them in the comments like I'm sure so many others would to!
The natives was already actively greening so this is just corporates taking over and ofc it won't be rewilding durr its for friggin agriculture or energy so its a prophet meaning meaning they aren't protecting it at any cost at all they are getting rid of it so it be all bs the Indians was already actively greening so they have no business and its their land its their people and they are trying to literally poison everyone with chemicals that at the very most should atleast be used if they really really truly have to to get rid of something bad
👌
Aggressive conservation is unfortunately the only way we will truly conserve the natural world under present conditions = the rich nations must surrender wealth to compensate the victims of this essential protection. If we do not rigorously protect what remains there will be nothing left = already we have seen this happening in thousands of environments, totally destroyed 1800-2025 = this is the truth. Indigenous victims of this essential work must be compensated and brought on board. Absolute need to win 100% understanding on this topic. Our planet is dying = the mother planet earth on which our life began = blessed gift of life came from the atmosphere 20% oxygen = it is decreasing ever more rapidly. Without oxygen we are finished. 18%? 16% 14% 12% 10% ?? ___ .
we need to agree a package of true information explaining what is happening to our planet earth, why it is happening, and what it will mean, with best scientific accurate predictions, on the basis of this input given to all human beings alive today, we must coordinate all our different worlds to minimize the coming disaster = we must know what is coming = on the basis of that knowledge doing all we can to soften the disaster = it will mean austerity = we must have the strong educational input to enable all the people of our planet to accept austerity, and for the rich to give their abundance to assist those in greatest need. Is this possible? No? Tell me then, what is the meaning of God? I have found this answer at last. Thank you.
"Leave it to the indigenous to take care of the land"
Uhhhhh 😂… the romanticism of indigeity especially in africa (a foreign concept to africans) is probably the ultimate western naivety
Honestly conservancy for our various ecosystems and animals really should be handled by the ingenious people who have done this for ages. There are ways to re-train and/or support them in going back to their "old ways".
The thing is that when one compares grazed land with conservation land, it's a radical contrast. There must be conservation of natural areas in the world for us to survive, as trees play a vital role in trapping carbon and producing oxygen. So much land has been converted into either commercial forests or grazing land that forests are becoming extinct, and truth be told, without them we are also dead. Fact is if there weren't conservation areas, there would be barrenness – dead land which is stripped to the bone by herds of goats and sheep, with no biodiversity left to speak of. I have nothing against people who stick to their ancestral ways, quite the contary, but there must be a compromise, or else we aren't headed for a very bright future.
In my view there isn't any "Green Colonialism". Only a choice we have to make and compromises which have to happen. Politicizing the issue only confuses and distracts from the truth of the matter as I have described.
X🙏🏴
This is very important to discuss. Few know about this issue.
Indigenous peoples are the strongest advocates for a healthy balanced relationship with the natural world. Encroachment by modern human life standards has always been the problematic feature. Is this situation somehow different from that pattern? Pitting one consequence against the other but ignoring the real problem? We must have come farther than this. Is there a solution beyond throwing indigenous people and their way of life and other living beings and their ecosystem under the bus?
I like to think alot of charity to africa is a lie to distract from all the natural resources being stolen while the people from the lands get nothing.
Scarcity based communities. Human beings act stupid not smart
"Hello Team Dw Documentary,
I am a Somali YouTuber. I translate educational content into the Somali language, which is spoken widely across East Africa. I am reaching out to ask for permission to translate your videos into Somali and share them on my channel.
My goal is to make your amazing documentaries accessible to more communities in East Africa. Could you please grant me permission or provide copyright-free videos for this purpose?
I look forward to hearing from you
This is why the native peoples of any colonized lands should be allowed and encouraged to be landowners, so they can manage their lands, protect wildlife, and earn income for themselves and their families.
🍄🌳🌾One can only hope that seeds are allowed to b collect from the forest to grow indigenous fruit and nut trees in a forest garden for those children.
Good to see the real truth of western conservation in Africa finally shown in media. It's all land grabs and indeginous rights abuse in the false guise of protection. OK, but that forest ambush was staged
I think the writers of Dr Stone need to decide this one.
The alternative is what exactly? In Tanzania they wiped out the leopard because they thought it carries the curses of the witches.
I don't think either party wants an honest discussion on this.
I wonder who commissions these journalistic reports? Lately, there's been this major attack on conservation and carbon credits. Someone benefits from destroying the green agenda, while indigenous people in Africa will remain poor, facing even greater climate problems and a degraded ecosystem.
One of most beautiful country ever ❤❤
Africa needs such measures otherwise they will wipe out all wildlife
Too many damn people… too few wild animals. Stop the humans
I will ALWAYS choose ecosystems over people. Humans, rich or poor, are environmentally harmful, disruptive and destructive. The planet would be doing great without us.
Hat sich jetzt die Trump-Regierung bei DW eingekauft?
More like 'CONservation' 😢
I don’t agree, actually people all over the world should be forbidden to have children, because we are the biggest threat to all Nature, World, without us the harmony and symphony of everything would be
Video proudly sponsered by Donald Trump!
Indigenous this, indigenous that.. The world has moved on – that lifestyle is finished. Move with it and start breaking the cycle of poverty for your children.
Money is for nature only, in the end.
Worldwide the focus should shift from commercial tourism masquerading as true responsible conservation meant for the original residents and people of the land
In my opinion hot tourist money ends up destroying the ethos of the native land in the long run
Well, rapid population growth in Africa harms valuable ecosystems and species there.
You can sympathise with poor people all you want BUT if you don’t acknowledge the FACT of exponential human population growth, your sympathy is not rooted in reality. Yes it will eventually even out but not before horrific conditions befall humans and animals alike. Even in “rich” countries the value placed human life is going to plummet. I am so happy I will be long dead by then.
There are faaar to many human beings on this Earth and not enough wildlife, over population IS a issue and needs to be taken seriously, every individual human being wanting so much and combine that 100,000+ and then some and at that point you're just bleeding the Earth dry.
There has to be a barrier, there has to be balance, there's no such thing as infinite resources.
Solution is simple – indeginous people should start this business too in co-operative manner. It will help budget tourists also.
I grew up nearby a trust-run conservancy in Kenya, the conservancy is run on a very misanthropic philosophy, often by people from cultures that don't value conservation.
These so called natives have already wiped out 99% of game outside of protected reserves where the very last of Africa's wildlife now exists. The natives need to get real jobs and stop killing anything that moves for food. StocktonRob
great piece highlighting the plight of indigenous people
NGOs are just big greedy corporations in disguise.Carbon credits?Who believes in that sham?
It’s tourism it happens to all countries… local communities in Barcelona are priced out in their own city. At least this video improves nature
Damn, crying about Everything ✌️😭
its just "normal" land grab by rich people…
and carbon credits, like plastic recycling
is just a scam
