Who Killed Lt. Van Dorn? is a searing investigative documentary by Zachary Stauffer that explores the tragic and preventable death of Navy Lieutenant Wes Van Dorn, who perished in a helicopter crash aboard an aging MH-53E Sea Dragon. What begins as a personal story of grief transforms into a broader exposé of systemic failure within the U.S. military.
Through powerful interviews with Van Dorn’s family, fellow servicemembers, and experts, the film uncovers a chilling pattern: decades of ignored safety warnings, outdated aircraft, and bureaucratic neglect that led to dozens of similar incidents. As his widow embarks on a quest for truth and justice, the documentary raises critical questions about institutional responsibility, transparency, and the human cost of silence.
This is more than a story of one man—it’s a wake-up call about a broken system that continues to put lives at risk.

Cavalier attitude to life like Boeing.
Helicopter crashed, dude died, blabla bla about personal life…. do not join army simple….
It's stupid to be in the military unless you want to die, one way or the other….
As a US Army veteran I can say that in the service you become nothing but an expendable asset. The higher the chain of command you go, the less they care. You are an object. Don't get me wrong, I'm proud I served my country. Generals, politicians only care about their careers and bank accounts.
May God rest and piece your brave soul sir Aman

"I Support Our Soldiers"
Typical political stump speech rhetoric. Nice bumper sticker.
But from Pat Tillman to Chelsea Manning to Walter Reed Hospital to PTSD treatment failures, to these 53s, etc etc
The rhetoric often rings as empty and meaningless as Communist propaganda.
El gobierno fue!
I worked on the Littoral Combat Ship project. One of it's missions is intended to be mine sweeping. A brief shot of the Freedom Class variant can be seen at 9:44 of this video. The first ship of the Freedom Class was accepted in 2008. It was already retired by 2021. The second ship of this class was in service for even fewer years. A total of 16 Freedom Class LCS were built. They were still in production at the time they were being retired from service.
There were people in the LCS program, civilians, engineers, navy personnel as well as journalists that knew this ship would not be able to meet it's mission goals. Yet from higher up foggy reasons were given for continuing. At the time I was very frustrated and annoyed by this waste. So much money and effort being wasted. After watching this video, I'm infuriated by it. This ship was to take over the mine sweeping duties and couldn't do it and excuses were made. At the other end there were 53 crews that had to take short cuts on maintenance under pressure from above. The cost of just one LCS could have gone a long way towards keeping a 53 flying safely.
A heartbreaking documentary 😢😢😢😢RIP officers😢😢
We had a similar issue here in Scotland with RAF Nimrod aircraft. They too were Cold War era aircraft and there were known issues with maintenance and parts etc. They should’ve been retired years before they were and it took the death of 14 men to sort it out. In 2006 a Nimrod crashed in Afghanistan and it was a ruptured fuel line that brought it down too. We’ve only recently been given the replacement aircraft after years and years of delays. Politicians kept dragging their feet. And another helicopter issue affected Scotland too – Super Puma helicopters used to transport workers and parts to the oil rigs in the North Sea would crash due to dodgy gears, bearing etc. After it happened a few times the decision was made to ground all Super Pumas used for oil work until fixes were made and folk were satisfied known issues sorted. How sad that money seems to be more important than the lives of folk who, (in this particular case),signed up to protect their country and make sacrifices to do so. The families left behind and the survivors are owed an apology in person by every penny-pinching officer or politician who decided to keep dangerous helicopters in service when they knew fine well how dangerous they were.
There’s a great documentary mentioned here at around the 37 minute mark; 1999 BBC "Panorama" documentary, titled "Die by Wire" (also known as "Death by Wire"). Panorama documentaries are usually very well researched and reported and this one is no exception. Definitely worth a look if you’ve got a free hour or so.
The country is all about money, making more wars, to build more war machines. Now there going to force all other counties to buy more war equipment to make the rich, richer. And those that pay the price? Is the common man and the planet we live on. To stupid to take the military budget and make peace.
I checked in to the sister squadron hm15 right after this happened 2014-2018 and was part of the airframe bulletin to fix the chafing issues. First I’ve ever heard of the wiring issues. I can say the culture in those squadrons didn’t change at all while I was there. No parts, no money, just make them fly. I watched a lot of aircrewman drop their wings. I was glad to leave. Oh and hm14 is decommissioned now but hm15 is still flying the same birds.
Omg when his Mumma ask to take them up & he said he would never take his family up in these helicopters, because he obviously knee how dangerous they were that destroyed me 😢😢😢
My daughter was invited to a bday party and when we were leaving the party my car wouldn’t start and these 2 men who were family of the birthday boy tried to fix it for me out in the hot a$$ sun!! Well apparently they worked on airplanes in the military lol I thought that was so cool. They were unable to fix my car bc it needed a new started lol but they tried and I was so grateful!! This documentary just made me think of them bc we need more people who just want to help without wanting anything in return without even wanting the praise just wanting to help out
US is always saying they have the greatest military in the world and send men in harms way & they don't even give them qualified equipment. These men died in training exercises not even combat. These men are not expendable. They are husband's, fathers, brothers, friends and professionals . Appalling. Higher ups in the military in this case didn't give a shit.Let them get up in them in them and fly them. Lies, falsifying records & numbers. My heart goes out to the Van Doran family. 31:58
