Leaving a cult behind – Can brainwashing be reversed? | DW Documentary
Breaking free from the clutches of a cult or a cultish religious movement is a long and painful process. So far, it’s one that has largely gone undocumented. Few people talk about the years of struggle — and relapses – breaking free entails. Five people who have gone through the process talk about their experiences.
This documentary about leaving cultish religious movements behind illustrates how powerful the conditioning is — and how deeply dependent it makes its victims. How is it possible to renounce one’s own identity and “reprogram” the brain?
Nicolas has been exposed to this influence since birth: his parents are Jehovah’s Witnesses. At the age of 22, he managed to break away from the Jehovah’s Witnesses – but he had to cut off contact with his family.
Julie was 31 and Yohann 20 when they both fell into the clutches of the French “Université de la relation” movement during what purported to be an ‘internship in the field of personal development’.
David and François became “warriors of light” after they trained in kung fu at the Parc de la Villette in Paris — and stuck with it for 10 years. They describe insidious manipulation and talk about how they were completely sucked into a parallel world.
The film’s moving accounts of cult dropouts and their long journeys back to a normal life are supplemented by insights into the work of a French police unit specializing in new religious movements.

Not even unique to Jehovah's Witnesses but anyway 15:35
As someone who grew up as a Jehovah's Witness, I can't say I agree that imagery is used to specifically target children.
The pictures featured are not even from children's book firstly 3:37
Not any more dramatic than the comic books I was accustomed to. I would have thought they're cool.
27:41 – "When I told my parents that I no longer wanted to be a Jehovah's Witness, they just said, 'We'll pretend you're dead.'" – That summarizes the Jehovah's Witnesses so called love.
History witnessed always the closed, isolated groups extra ordinarily behavior groups ,what was their's early shine proclaiming, religious slogans, and decisiveness opinions ,finally they committee crimes, mass murderers ,abuses, and unthinkable crimes…[inside all populations, economic superpowers within combination former authoritatives are controlling and directing populations for economic superpowers' interests and politicians desires..] cult groups, underground politicians, and secret societies haven't capabilities and responsibilities to saving humanity… inferior minds having no capabilities to returning their's social ,mindset balancing inside their's normal widths societies…how they saving humanity as wholesome
These cults look a lot like Communism
I didn't know that the Jehovah's Witnesses were considered a cult under French law. Well done, French Government!
I'm not a very devoted Jehovah's Witness, but while the exJW's qualms regarding his upbringing are valid, they aren't universal JW experiences. My mother was very understanding and there was no demonic fear instilled in us whatsoever. 3:06
Heck, I even was allowed to have many non-JW friends.
You can return to God the easy way, or the hard way.
I notice a trend to stretch the definition of a cult to suit the whim of the journalist. I used to respect DW but this is over the top. There is a lot of misinformation in this one.
Please make a video like this on the radical parties of Pakistan. A lot of interesting matter might come up.
Jeez years of cultish activity in my heyday. Now 88 years old. Thank God Im not an animist no longer!
The EU is the greatest cult, socialism never left
Religion is a man made bull of shit designed to manipulate and control people's mind!!!
Are you suggesting other religions are not a cult? 😂😂
There is a huge Playlist folder on my channel looking at all things Jehovah’s witnesses, look for the Playlist folder titled ‘ The truth about the truth’
Aren't all religions basically cults?
Please add the original subtitles, the automatic ones are disastrous
I wish we would stop constantly playing down how much brainwashing really happens.
That woman looks like Corey Feldman
Current agenda is to name religions as a cult. You say this when it’s not about Islam. When you know you know, some of us are happy with our Christianity and Jesus will always being the King. I hope you all find the love and truth in the Bible without being in a cult. ♥️
‘Trans’ ideology is a cult.
It is sad that the true intentions of an organization is presented in a completely false light. Why don't you tell us what teaching of the Jehovah's witnesses is not backed by scripture. All our teachings is backed by scriptural reference, devoid of metaphysical or exoteric dimensions.
I've always been grateful my father taught me about world religions and how the evolved. Everyone I know who grew up with heavy religious dogma, has been harmed by it.
