Six concrete blocks serve as a feeble barrier at the U.S.-Canada border, attempting to prevent vehicles carrying migrants from crossing into the United States. However, these barriers are ineffective when it comes to individuals on foot, who can easily bypass them according to Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) Sergeant Daniel Dubois.
In response to threats from U.S. President-elect Donald Trump regarding tariffs if Canada and Mexico do not take action to reduce the flow of migrants and drugs into the U.S., Canada has pledged to increase the deployment of officers and technology to target southbound border-crossers. Despite these efforts, Canadian law enforcement officials admit that their ability to prevent southbound migrants from crossing the border is limited.
The challenges faced by Canadian authorities highlight the complexities of border security and the difficulty in completely halting illegal crossings. As tensions continue to rise between the U.S. and its neighbors over border control measures, finding effective solutions to address these issues remains a pressing concern for both countries.
