In the world of sports, one of the biggest stories happening off the field is the rise of sports betting. What was once a shady, underground activity has now become a mainstream part of the spectator experience, with fans placing wagers on everything from point spreads to the color of Gatorade bottles.
In a recent episode of the “60 Minutes: A Second Look” podcast, correspondent Jon Wertheim explores the implications of the popularization of sports betting. While it is now fully legal in most states, there is growing concern over the potential for gambling addiction. This is a topic that “60 Minutes” has been covering for decades, even before it was officially recognized by the DSM.
Wertheim delves into the past by revisiting stories from the 1970s and 80s, specifically focusing on an extreme compulsive gambler named Irving North. Viewers are introduced to North’s son Larry, who shares his experience of growing up with a father whose addiction was tearing their family apart. Wertheim reflects on how these past stories can provide valuable insights into the future of sports betting and its potential impact on society.
With the podcast available on various platforms, including Apple Podcasts, listeners can tune in to gain a deeper understanding of the complex world of sports betting. As technology continues to evolve and transform the way we engage with sports, it is crucial to consider the potential consequences and take steps to address them. The “60 Minutes: A Second Look” podcast offers a thought-provoking exploration of this timely and important issue.

Gambling is a drug addiction and those who operate it are the pushers.
I can't find anything on Irving North online
"The house always wins". Liars! It is very possible to make an overall profit on gambling at the casino card counting… And on sports betting. If the gambler is better at assessing chance than the betting market. The vast majority of gamblers lose, but some of us make good profits. Even doing it for a living. It's all about probabilities. This is an extremely one-sided, biased, anti-gambling bull…. I feel very sorry for those addicted but that's no reason to lie.
Schools don't spend enough time teaching kids about probabilities and why it is so important in gambling. Am convinced if they did then many gamblers would not get addicted.
