The lives of Israeli hostages are on the line, facing greater danger than ever before

The fate of Israeli hostages in Gaza hangs in the balance as the architect of the October 7 attacks, Yahya Sinwar, has been eliminated. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu may now have the opportunity to be more flexible on a possible cease-fire deal that could end the war and potentially secure the release of the captives. Critics suggest that Netanyahu’s previous refusal to consider a deal may have been influenced by concerns for his political position.

The families of the hostages in Gaza are calling on Netanyahu to refocus efforts towards negotiating a deal for their loved ones’ release. With Sinwar’s killing potentially changing the dynamics of the situation, there may be new possibilities for progress.

For a deeper analysis and insight into the potential ways forward, including the endgame in sight following Sinwar’s death, FRANCE 24’s François Picard is joined by Dr. Gilbert Achcar, an Author, Researcher, and Professor of Development Studies and International Relations at SOAS University of London.

As the situation remains uncertain and the captives’ safety is at stake, there is a sense of urgency for diplomatic efforts to be intensified in order to secure their release and bring an end to the conflict in Gaza.
