The lure of St. Moritz – From sleepy mountain village to luxury resort | DW Documentary
St. Moritz is the birthplace of alpine winter tourism, as well of many winter sports. The village, with its magnificent location in the Swiss Engadin mountains, was already attracting celebrities in the last century.
St. Moritz is one of the most exclusive winter sports resorts in the world, with a burnished history. Located in the picturesque Swiss Engadin mountains, the village attracted many celebrities in the last century: including Charlie Chaplin, Audrey Hepburn, Brigitte Bardot, Gunter Sachs, Andy Warhol and Herbert von Karajan. Coco Chanel sought refuge here, during the war. Alfred Hitchcock was inspired to write his first classic in one of St. Moritz’s grand hotels, and returned many times over the decades. The Shah of Persia temporarily ruled his empire from a chalet on the Suvretta slope.
Just 150 years ago, St. Moritz was still a simple mountain village. Then adventurous Englishmen arrived, invented new winter sports and laid the foundation for the town’s fame. Five-star hotels sprang up in the village of 5,000 inhabitants, which suddenly became a winter hotspot for the rich and famous.
Numerous winter sports originated here, some of which are unique to this location: in Cresta, participants race headfirst down into the valley on low sleds – on the longest natural ice track in the world.
The Cresta Club, founded over 100 years ago by Englishmen, is still one of the most exclusive clubs in the world. In skijoring, skiers are pulled across the frozen Lake St. Moritz by horses. Winter sports, tradition and sophisticated lifestyle, luxury and cosmopolitanism characterize the history of St. Moritz.

I think the craziest part about st. moritz are the private jets… Literally ever 5 min you will see one landing in the near by airport… I couldn’t even believe that…
I thought it was France 😊
how can you ca a mountain full of snow ,a luxury??. decadent .
Hitchcock the biggest boring director.
Wonderfull doc. Thanks for the upload.
For me to go here would be a nightmare. Full of posers, extortionate prices for rich fools, conceited arrogant tourists more interested in being seen than skiing, poncey restaurants with stupid overpriced food that wouldn't satisfy a flea and basically a place to be rather than a ski resort.
I am not jealous by any means, more mystified why any normal person would want to go there.
This is the reason I want to be rich. So that I can go to these places and have meet rich people and live the life
The history of St. Moritz began already 2000 years ago when the Roman Republic became an empire through Julius Caesar. In honor of Julius Caesar, the Alpine pass near St. Moritz was given the name Julier Pass, and St. Moritz got its name from the Roman General Saint Maurice from Egypt in his honor. The healing springs in St. Moritz were very popular, as they still are today. St. Moritz is really a cool place, both in summer and in winter. You can travel from Milan as well as from Zurich by train; both routes are highly recommended.
It's the Raetian Railway. Not the "ritchian" railway. The indigenous people who live there call themselves Raetian and they speak Raetian. That's why the Railway received that name too.
Believe me in kosovonthey are even more beautifull. This is nothing for us.
Another isolated hided for the 1&% to do their corrupt and evil doings !!
Pahlavi omg lol 😂
That joint is a wasting money pit.😂
Given warming, and less & less snowfall….
(just look at Lake Mead/Powell, & the Colorado River) 🤔
That man is clearly the son of both of them. 😅 He has the same window's peak and a bunch of other features.
Traveling by train is probably the most fascinating experience one can have, especially through the most serene and scenic places.DW documentaries never disappoint. Thank you for the effort.
😊
And now its place for wealthy russians to brag. Discusting. Slava Ukraini!
Oh look, a railway to a mountain resort. Whistler held the "greenest Olympics" in 2010 & the largest legacy project was widening the highway that parallels the old BC rail line that is infrequently only used for freight. North American car culture…
So beautiful ❤️❤️❤️
