“The US will do less and we have to do more” – German Defense Minister Pistorius

German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius has not minced his words in response to US Vice President JD Vance’s recent remarks at the Munich Security Conference. In a speech, Vance accused Europe of allowing free speech to be “in retreat,” a statement that Pistorius has vehemently rejected.

“It’s about his opinion about democracies. And I said, no, this is not acceptable to accuse us [of] not being real Democrats. And I had to make that clear as a representative of a German government here in Munich,” Pistorius stated.

The clash between Pistorius and Vance highlights the growing tensions between Europe and the United States, with the German Defense Minister expressing the need for Europe to take on more responsibility in the face of what he perceives as unwarranted criticism from the US.

The rift between the two allies underscores the complexities of transatlantic relations and the differing perspectives on democracy and free speech. As Europe navigates its role in the international arena, Pistorius’s strong stance serves as a reminder of the need for European nations to stand firm in defense of their values and principles.
