The UK general election is underway and the first result of the night has been declared. Labour’s Bridget Phillipson has secured victory in the Houghton and Sunderland South constituency. The seat has been a stronghold for Labour since its establishment in 2012.
Phillipson emerged triumphant with 18,847 votes, potentially paving the way for her to take on the role of education secretary. She has previously held the education brief in Keir Starmer’s shadow cabinet since November 2021.
In a surprising turn of events, Reform UK’s Sam Woods-Brass managed to outperform the Conservatives and clinch second place in the constituency.
As the election continues to unfold, all eyes are on the evolving political landscape in the UK. Stay tuned for more updates and results as they come in.
