At the conclusion of today’s security summit in London aimed at ending the war in Ukraine, Britain’s Prime Minister Keir Starmer highlighted the need for Europe to take on the responsibility of defending itself. During the summit, attended by over a dozen high-ranking delegates including Ukraine’s President Volodymr Zelenskyy, Starmer proposed the formation of a ‘coalition of the willing’ to support Ukraine in its efforts to resolve the conflict with Russia.
The urgency of finding a resolution to the war in Ukraine has been emphasized as the United States signals a decreased willingness to support the country. With this shift in the international landscape, Starmer stressed the importance of European nations stepping up and doing the ‘heavy lifting’ to ensure their own defense.
The summit also saw Ukrainian lawmaker Yevheniia Kravchuk, ALDE Party Vice President, echoing Starmer’s remarks on Europe needing to take a more proactive role in ensuring security. This sentiment was further reinforced by outgoing German Chancellor Scholz, who emphasized the need for strong European defenses in light of current geopolitical challenges.
