US-Canada Trade War: The Cost of Fighting Back
In the escalating battle of tariffs between the United States and Canada, tensions have reached a new high. U.S. President Donald Trump has characterized Canada’s retaliatory tariffs as “foolish,” insisting that they stand no chance of winning a trade war against his administration. His inflammatory remarks come amid Canada’s decision to impose duties on a range of U.S. products, a move Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has labeled as defensive in nature, stating, “You are at war when you get attacked.”
Trump’s pointed comments extend beyond mere criticism; he has taken to social media, arguing that Canada seeks to enjoy the benefits of U.S. statehood without the corresponding responsibilities. This rhetoric has only intensified the back-and-forth between the two countries.
In this charged climate, Wendy Cutler, an esteemed former negotiator with the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative, provides valuable insights into the dynamics at play. She raises critical questions about whether Carney’s approach may be a strategic miscalculation and who actually holds the leverage in these negotiations—Washington or Ottawa?
As the trade war unfolds, it has profound implications not only for the economies of both nations but also for the political landscape in the U.S. and Canada. Analyzing the potential repercussions, Cutler argues that Canada’s carefully targeted tariffs could disrupt U.S. political alignments, particularly in key electoral regions heavily dependent on trade with Canada.
Despite the current hostilities, discussions around de-escalation persist. While both nations remain entrenched in their positions, there seems to be a consensus that diplomacy will be essential to resolving the conflict. The nature of Trump and Carney’s relationship will play a crucial role in determining the future of these negotiations.
As the costs of fighting back continue to mount for both sides, the question remains: can the United States and Canada find common ground before the effects of this trade war are felt too profoundly? The stakes are high, and the need for resolution is urgent in a world defined by interconnected economies and shared interests.

Anyone remember cartoon networks IM Weasel?
My money is on Carney.
Monday world stock markets will be brutal…
A very biased USAmerican guest. The USA produces stuff that Canadians want. Canada produces stuff that the USA needs. It's easier to do without 'wants' than to do without 'needs'. DJT is frustrated with PM Carney because we will not sign over our sovereignty to the USA. They ask too much and offer too little. They started the war, we will see it through to the end.
I stand with Canada against the orange buffoon!! Canada should join the EU.
LOL…The Booze ban has Trumps diapers filled..Imagine when we go after the energy…The United Snakes will fold like a cheap tent
😂😂😂😂😂 DW, you call her an expert?????? Piss off
APAN SHOULD PRODUCE MORE SMALL, FAST MILITARY VESSELS (SURFACE VESSELS AND SUBMARINES) FOR EXPORT (BECAUSE THESE VESSELS SURVIVE WAR).
Says who?
Canadian here, and proud of it. Let's get something straight. The vast majority of Canadians totally support walking away from a bad deal with the Orange Snake and his Band of Bozo's. The USA wants the power to dictate who Canada can do business with ? Not bloody likely. Take off eh…ya Hoser's…
Canadians are 100% behind Carney unlike the 33% of Americans that approve of Trump's tariffs. Trumps started this war and we all know before September 8th Trump will Taco. Next time have someone independent comment on this issue rather than a Trump mouthpiece.
As French Canadians say: mange la merd! 😁
DW is still acting as a serf to USA.
Canada have balls to defy the bully.
Carney and the Canadians supporters have shown themselves to be worthy examples to follow.
It is better to walk away from a bad deal than to be a slave to it.
A country sovereignty is more important.
Canada could seriously hurt the USA, crash its economy.
The USA is dependent on Canadian commodities, of which some the USA would not be able to get elsewhere short-term, at least not during the remainder of his presidency.
One side wants to be a dictator state the other wants to remain an elite state.
Stay strong Canada. The US seems to think The Americas are theirs.
Canada should stop exporting petro products to the US.
Carney cancel ALL military contracts with America
To our American friends..impeach Donald Trump . To investors..Dump American Bonds and securities. To all Canadians…Buy Canadian and Elbows up🇨🇦!
Canadian here. So proud of our PM Carney.
The majority of Canadians are willing to put in hard times to wait this coward out.
There are other countries in the world. I know it’s shocking to some ( not all) Americans.
Trump doesnt understand international trade, he never has. Trade is about mutual benefit, it’s about striking win-win deals. Thats not how he operates.
She’s nuts
I don't think it can be underestimated what the impact of how united Canadians are, while how divided Americans are. Of course, America now signs all deals in pencil so any resolution will only last until trump needs another major distraction from his criminal competence and governing incompetence.
In the short term Canada will pay the biggest price but if the US continues down this path long term it will be the biggest loser as Canada will diversify away from the US over time and Canadian resources will go to Europe and Asia. This will make the US economy less competitive over time. Countries trust Canada and if they can get Canadian resources at a competitive price they will buy Canadian knowing that those resources won't be weaponized against them and contracts will be honoured. Right now Canada isn't interested in selling resources to the US we want to sell them abroad to lessen our dependence on the US. We are talking about building pipelines and ports to our Pacific, Atlantic and Arctic coast, so we can lessen our dependence on the US. This kind of planning and investment has been absent in Canada for almost 40 years since we signed free trade with the US and tied our economy almost completely to the Americans. In the past, all of our infrastructure investments were oriented to serving southern trade routes those days are coming to an end.
If the US was united, sure. But a lot of the US hates you, Trump. And a lot of Americans don't want to keep messing with our friends and allies.
Didn't Trump or Lutnick (rhymes with Sputnik, just saying), just try to strong arm Canada and Canada walk away from the table. So, now that Trump and Sputnik know that didn't work, we'll see where this all goes.
Trump does not want to negotiate. He just wants to dictate what he wants. It's his way to bully Canada to become the 51state. He will have to back-off if any negotiation are to be happening. People trough out the world know that Canada is not nasty. They know that Canada is reliable and respectful.
Energy is a weapon ,make no mistake
The question is will the United States citizens watch or support ? Don't forget 51st state threats , we fight because of it .
