Thank you for sharing this voyage. Pacific North West looks wonderful. Can't wait to visit someday with my wife.
I could never explore this area. I am like a dog and just can't stay out of the water and if I can't go in because it is too cold, it is so stressful for me.
I came to the same decision as you about a year ago. Diesel trawler beats a sailboat for this part of the country. I’m happily motoring now instead of waiting on the wind.
❤bang on the mark you two, I was hoping you would find out about these amazing vessels, these are literally go anywhere boats, for real, beefy, well made, and a redundancy program second to none, 👍😊 , if you want motor yacht, these are the ones to look at, 🌏🐬,ps,your on the right path guys, 👍😊🌏🐬 great to see you out there, looking good guys. 👍😊❤️
hey, going to throw a huge curve your way. imagine using solar panel to hydrolyse water into oxygen and hydrogen capturing the hydrogen gas into metal hydrides to increase efficiency of storing hydrogen. then your water craft is equipped with an engine that can run on diesel, hydrogen and or compressed natural gas. so technically you got a water maker that feeds the hydrolyser that produces the hydrogen gas that fuel the engine and of course diesel as backup and you can even stash a few cylinder of cng for emergency or fuel efficiency. so you keep the hydrolyzer going even when you are not moving that you can build up your stash of hydrogen gas which is earth friendly. so you get the idea, I mean the pilot house it's like you have gone to business first class. No more tacky cat interior lounges. Classy upscale business pilot houses for lifestyle living, I mean who needs sails when you got hydrogen. have I thrown a spanner? all the best, love you guys!
Hey guys! It was such a thrill to meet you on the dock in Anacortes! I'm glad you are seeing the allure of a good trawler😉. Can't wait to see what you thought of the Nordhavns. Did you happen to meet up with Frank and Leslie of MV Kariwa? It's an N64. They also have a YouTube channel, have been all over the world in their Nordhavns, and they had just come into Cap Sante that day. I told them you were there😊. They would be great to talk to
Have you considered a trip on a "Motor-Sailor" boat? It's a hybrid design that is mostly a troller BUT, it also incorporates a rather big mast and sail for when conditions are just right. Perhaps it is something to consider.
If you want to see less wind then raise your main sail. If you want dead calm then raise your spinnaker. I inherited my Dads Macgregor 26. Fortunately it has a 50 HP Suzy (named her Quatro) and I can cruise around at 15 knots. Love to sail but the wind is iffy. I've got a slip in Blaine WA so you must have gone right by.
I just love being on the water. Doesn’t matter if I am on a sailboat or motorboat. My only drawback with the trawlers is the fuel cost. It just does not give you the option to pull out the sails. It just would make me sick when I pull up to a fuel dock and fill up a 500 or 1000 gal diesel fuel tank. 😢 But if you got money that is the way to go. 😂 Love you guys. ❤
Nikki, You did a good job deliverng the coffee.
Oh, and forgot to say…. If you are wanting to see glaciers and fjords, you could spend years exploring BC and Alaska. Some of the best cruising in the world
good to see you are doing more than your share to speed up climate change, the 1% not only have 50% of the wealth but also contribute 50% of the warming.
Sailing is great since you save so much on fuel most of the time, but if you don't have wind, then you are basically a rowboat. Explorer vessels let you go anywhere without having to worry about that. Plus as you get older, it gets harder to run a sailboat compared to any other type of boat. If you can afford the fuel, the choice is a no brainer in my mind.
Was that an Agarikon mushroom? Very rare if so. Paul Stamets is working on the conservation of the Agarikon. Awesome video production!
Hi diesel mechanic here, the answer would be no running the engine at very low rpm would shorten the life of the engine considering that engine I would run it at at least 1000 rpm to ensure that the turbo is producing enough pressure to burn the fuel efficiently.
Remember the problem with a boat is it is in effect pushing up hill all the time because of the bow wave. This is why the fuel burn increases so much when speed is increased.
Well, if you can afford the size boat you need for the lifestyle you want….no brainer…..an explorer yacht is the choice especially if you plan on that being your primary home for a number of years. Whoever said that a motor yacht is only good for getting you from point A to point B is delusional and your current trip proves that. You are not using your time to work the sails and rigging, you are using it to enjoy and savor the trip!
I feel like you can see the adventure happiness in Nikki and Jason's eyes again! I know they are not buying this specific boat but, my money is starting to bet they get one just like it!
So. Over the years you may remember me saying something like this: (coming from an ex-dealer/broker of trawlers (Grand Banks/Alaskans), semi-displacement/planing hulls (Hatteras), and ocean crossing sailboats (Island Packet, Dufour). “Different styles of boats attract different personalities.” The gold chain wearing sports-fisher folks have their own priorities. So do sailors however at some point many/most sailors come around to appreciate the benefits of trawler or explorer powerboats. As you are discovering, the costs are not as great as you might imagine and the comforts, safety and practicality are very real. Especially if you are either living aboard or doing long range cruising. As for me, I’ve always said “being on board the boat is my real destination, what’s outside is the entertainment.” I’m neither in a hurry to get there nor do I enjoy zig-zagging to do so. You are experiencing how different being on the water can really be. Congrats, this might be a blessing in disguise.
UHH ,,, SO ITS BACKWARDS …
JUST TURN AROUND AND FACE THE REAR… DOH !!!
Drive a little VW Polo as fast as you can, then Drive behind it in a BMW M4 and just match the little polo`s speed. The Polo will burn alot more fuel than the BMW going the same speed, less effort to achive the same speeds……..In a nutshell anyway.
Don't forget about the wind and current in your effieciency calcs.
🎶Love the music around 25-27min. Who is it?
NICE,,, DIESELS DONT LIKE TO IDLE / LOW LOAD … BEST RANGE IS 60-80% LOAD / RPM
I think Curiosity ruined them for the comfort of sailing due to the continuous misery placed upon them for a mfr. that was not ready for the technology, and this type of vessel will give them great respite to recharge and get reinvigorated with the water….engines have their place, solar has its place…and yes they can coexist, everything is a compromise in the engineering world.
Is Explorer Yacht life what you thought it would be? Better, as expected, worse? We're curious to hear your thoughts.
