A late-season winter system is set to bring significant snowfall and gusty winds across parts of Idaho and Wyoming, prompting the National Weather Service (NWS) to issue a Winter Weather Advisory covering 16 counties and mountainous regions.
The advisory warns of accumulating snow, hazardous travel conditions, and strong winds through Thursday night, particularly at higher elevations.
Snowfall and Wind Expectations
Forecasters say the storm will primarily impact areas above 6,500 feet, where snow accumulations are expected to range from 2 to 14 inches in Idaho and 5 to 12 inches across much of Wyoming. In higher peaks, especially in the Teton Range, localized totals could reach up to 18 inches.
Wind gusts are also expected to intensify, with speeds reaching 40 to 50 mph in many areas and up to 45 mph in exposed mountain passes, creating blowing snow and reduced visibility.
A meteorologist with the National Weather Service stated, “Travel could be very difficult, especially across higher elevations and mountain passes where snowfall and wind will combine to create dangerous conditions.”
Regions Under Advisory
In Idaho, the advisory covers mountainous areas including the Bear River Range, Caribou Range, and the Sawtooth and Lost River ranges. Communities such as Sun Valley, Stanley, and Island Park are expected to see periods of steady snowfall.
Meanwhile, in Wyoming, the advisory extends across major mountain regions including Yellowstone National Park, the Teton and Gros Ventre Mountains, and the Salt River Range. Key travel corridors such as Teton Pass and Togwotee Pass are likely to be impacted by snow-covered roads and reduced visibility.
Timing and Storm Progression
The storm will arrive in phases, beginning early Wednesday in parts of Idaho and expanding across Wyoming by midday. The most intense snowfall is expected from Wednesday afternoon through Thursday evening, with some areas experiencing prolonged periods of steady accumulation.
In Idaho’s higher terrain, snowfall could begin as early as midnight Tuesday night, continuing into Thursday morning. Wyoming regions, including Yellowstone and surrounding mountain ranges, will see the heaviest impacts from Wednesday afternoon through late Thursday.
