After a month-long Canada Post strike amid labour disputes with the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW), Labour Minister Steven MacKinnon has intervened to order the national mail service to resume its operations next week. Speaking at a press conference, MacKinnon emphasized the importance of maintaining industrial peace and ensuring that negotiations between Canada Post and CUPW can continue in a constructive manner. The existing collective agreements between the two parties will be extended until May 2025, with an official report from an Industrial Inquiry Commission due to be issued earlier.
The strike, which began on November 14, saw approximately 55,000 Canada Post employees on the picket lines, resulting in the delay of around 1 million packages per day ahead of the holiday season. MacKinnon highlighted the negative impacts of the strike on small businesses, charities, rural communities, and Indigenous peoples. The government’s intervention is aimed at protecting Canadians and resolving the labour dispute as quickly as possible.

Get back to work. Canadians are waiting.
Was this mostly theatre? Layoffs were going to be so striking staff collect EI at almost full pay? Most jobs will be lost to tech going fwd. Transition to smaller non profit govt service for rural/ smaller areas.
How about try asking “with workers being asked to resume their work while the ongoing investigation and solution seeking continues, will there be any compensation and or thought put into the future negotiations about all the extra hard work being asked of them to rush through the over 1 million parcels that Canadians are hoping to get before Christmas? Cause it’s one thing to go back to work feeling victorious versus feeling defeated and now being asked to resume work at double the effort on the same parameter that made them go on strike in the first place.”
Finally the libs do something useful.
Slow walking Government … these new directives should have been done from the beginning …
It wasn't a disruption to business, it was a loss of revenue, big loss! This should have been done from the day the mediator said the sides were too far apart. Unions want better benefits, wages, etc, Management wants to operate and make profits, you sir sat on your hands and acted much too late, you are to blame, period!
I still can't believe it took so long for them to step in. Especially during the Christmas season. The only reason they (cp) did this during this time of year was because they thought they'd get something. All they got was hurting people during a very important time. Talk about being selfish💯💯💯
Is Jagmeet Sighn fighting for postal workers rights ?
This should have been done 3 weeks ago.. but hay! Better late than never
Why am I getting this feeling that by the time this whole thing is done and over with the union will regret not having taken the deal offered by CP in the first place? I guess time will tell…
About time!! Some companies refuse to pay into bank accounts abroad & insist check in mail only. This strike has put me into rent arrears, you should be ashamed!!
Yesterday Dec 12: "Ottawa says it Won't Intervene"
Today Dec 13: "Federal Government Orders End to Canada Post Strike".
🤔
In my country, the Post is owned and managed by the government (like community hospitals, governmental offices, etc). Why not here, if that is an essential service provider?
Another of Jagmeet Singh line in the sand that if the Liberals crossed it. He and the NDP would vote for an election by bringing down the government. So now the ball is in his court once again. Unfortunately, the rest of us will have to wait until February 2025 for a chance to vote to bring down the Liberal government. If times are right, it will be after his pension…
Load up fedex,DHL, UPS stock
Good job. 🙏
Canada joke instead of Canada Post
To do this at this time of the year is only hurting small business and rural communities showing a complete lack of respect for their customers fire them all starting with management. We should stop subsidizing, big business and unions that clearly get nothing done but hurt the underdog no wonder Amazon is thriving .
Its about time.. i think we need a class action law suit against the federal government for not providing the public service we all were taxes for.
You dont just get to shut down public services because workers strike.
You own Purolator now, where is my mail? There's amazon and other places.
Scabe workers etc.
You allowed the contracts to laspe without making deals with the workers causing a strike.
Trudeau needs to be sued into hell
wow does this ever make jag and the NDP look stupid. the NDP campaigns on the rights of unions and they just let the Liberals rub their face on the ground
Why not turn this loss making company into a public private enterprise so it can perform more efficiently
CP is toast.
The insurmountable revenue loss next year will be for the Guinness books.
Who in their right mind would want to do business with them after all this?
Blame Canada post for not changing their business model and adapting to the times.
Wow, After NDP vote to keep the liberals in, smucks
Prime Language is English in Canada, French comes in past second‼️
All these go back to work legislation need to stop. Strikes SHOULD affect the economy and SHOULD make the government think they should improve stuff instead of bending the knee to corporations like they do with literally everything now. Our government is bought and payed for not by the people but a few individuals
BACK TO WORK
on y va
100%
Canadians are rightfully fed up!!
These same unions could not protect workers during covid.
Greed and entitlement
CP is a crown corp. CP and government are bullies workers benefits
Epic fail
Its a federal essential service ….strikes should be prohibited ..hire new people
40 million people held hostage ..essential service purposly disabled ….the law needs to change
FJT! They should have done this on day one
About time get back to work Canada Post this is crazy you should be ashamed stop being greedy and deliver people mail already this is wrong we need our mail why do this so close to Christmas this needs to stop!
Coup d’état in progress
Stay on strike we don't need you.
Should have been done weeks ago – it's about time. Now is the time to look for a permanent replacement.
about time
Canada Post lost many Canadian supports. I will never drop another package with them..
It's about time u force these ppl back to work ..u can force other ppl and companies to go back then these idiots r no different..retire these greedy ppl
I totally agree with the government’s movement on this issue. Enough is enough and we have enough of this kinda crap. They seem to pick Christmas time quite often to hold there strikes. Canadian postal workers have cost our country damages that may take years to undo. So shame on Canada post and good for our government to finally stand up for Canadians. Unions have their place, but their greed and their policies take over. I am a disabled person who has to live frugally everyday just to survive. So enough of the poor me attitude from Canada post.
😂🤣
Anyone ordering now will not receive their package for Christmas anyways. Imagine the percentage lost as they start going through backlog.
