Sterling K. Brown is set to narrate an upcoming documentary honoring the history of Black coaches in the NFL. The news was announced at SXSW on March 8 by Tarana Harris Mayes, the director and producer of “Better Than They Found It: Black Coaches Who Shaped The Modern NFL.”
The doc was announced on “The Play Gap: Women Behind the Camera in Sports” panel in Austin, Texas, also featuring panelists Deborah Riley Draper, Maya Washington and Maeyen Bassey.
“Better Than They Found It” chronicles the revolution of Black coaches, both envisioning their future and celebrating their progress. It includes interviews with influential coaches and Hall of Fame players, including Tony Dungy, Paul Tagliabue, Herm Edwards, Art Shell and Bruce Arians, among others.
“I am grateful to Sterling K. Brown for championing this project and committing to narrate,” says Mayes, the founder and executive producer of Capacity Media. Mayes not only has decades of experience in producing, but her father, Chick Harris, had a 40-year NFL coaching career.
Per the official synopsis, “Go inside the high-stakes world of those who dare to lead the game they love to play. Pro football insiders take audiences behind the headlines on their thrilling American adventure in the coaching profession, where your calling is also your job, and the jobs, at the pinnacle of sport, are few. As with the elite athletes they mentor, teach, and train, opportunity is a linchpin that holds a decades-long career together or unravels dreams, even as they work to make the dreams of others come true.”
Brown currently leads and executive produce Hulu’s “Paradise,” which was recently renewed for a second season.
