Ontario’s Response to Trump’s Tariff Expansion: Doug Ford Stands Firm
In a bold stance against U.S. President Donald Trump’s latest trade policy, Ontario Premier Doug Ford has declared that Canada should retaliate “twice as hard” after the Trump administration expanded steel and aluminum tariffs, affecting over 400 additional product categories. This escalation has galvanized Ford to advocate for a more aggressive approach, emphasizing that Canada must stand its ground against what he perceives as an increasingly belligerent U.S. trade strategy.
During a press conference on Wednesday, Ford was frank in his criticism of Trump’s tactics, pointing out the apprehension felt by American lawmakers in the face of the President’s decisions. “Not a single American senator or governor agrees with his tactics. But guess what? They’re terrified of him,” he remarked, highlighting a perception of fear that influences political actions across the border.
Ford’s determination was unequivocal as he asserted, “We aren’t going to roll over. We aren’t going to kiss his backside. We’re going to fight like we never fought before.” His fiery rhetoric underscores a commitment to resist what many see as unjust trade practices and unfair economic pressures from the United States.
In conjunction with his denouncement of the tariffs, the Ontario government is taking proactive steps to bolster its workforce amid these challenging economic times. Ford announced a significant $70 million investment aimed at enhancing worker training and employment services. This allocation includes $20 million for the Protect Ontario Workers Employment Response (POWER) Centers and $50 million directed towards the Better Jobs Ontario program, indicating a focus on equipping Ontarians with the skills necessary to thrive despite external economic pressures.
As tensions rise over trade policies, it remains to be seen how Ford’s assertive approach will play out, but his commitment to standing firm against U.S. tariffs is clear. As Ontario seeks to navigate these turbulent economic waters, the provincial government appears ready for a battle, demonstrating resilience and a determination to protect its interests.

I agree with Trump's tactics.
Why doesn't Canada make its own pop cans, its own lithium factories, its own copper plants, opening up the meat and agriculture sectors within Canada?
You're telling me 42 Million Canadians don't use cans?
Cut the electricity already!
Tariffs are shattering Canada.
Yes stand your grounds!!!❤
Says the tariffs are a tax on Americans while he supports Canada fighting back with tariffs 😂
Canada has no cards
Elbows up!
This Guy is a JOKE😅
Waaaa….waaaaa
If we have to show trump that Canada is serious, cut the electricty and the water. FAFO mister president.
All he does is bully people. Stand your ground, Ford
He’s a much better leader than you are Doug Ford….
Mr. Ford stop kissing Carney's butt ,he's backtracking on just about every thing he promised , plus he outright lied about his holdings , I have nothing but cash and property , it looks really bad on you .
We need a huge change in Canada in Jesus name!!!!! And its not this mess!!!
Glad this guy is on our side rather than the orange guy… go FORD…
In my opinion patience should be the key in our foreign policy towards America. 🇨🇦
We should put a fee on all electricity exports to the US
To consider the dark future of the US annexation of Canada, one only needs to look to the past. Americans killed nearly 700,000 of their compatriots in the country’s Civic War , fought over slavery, while Canadians flourished in peace. And while nearly 60,000 Americans died in the Vietnam War, young Canadian adults built a future for themselves and their nation. While America has shown resilience, its future can be grim, when in league with the merchants of death.
How about next they're on fire we dont send any help
Keep poking the bear Doug, I'm sure we'll have 75% tariffs by tomorrow.
And yet Ford has expanded natural gas use and new natural gas electricity generation plants in Ontario. This natural gas is Fracked and comes from m the US. Does not make Ontario energy independent as he claimed. Natural gas is fracked methane fossil fuel. Yes it’s off topic. But Ford talks tough on some issues and in the meantime is cutting some shady deals on the side.
These guys in Canada need to negotiate and play it smart instead of talking smack, Canada doesn't have the clout to compete with the US from a basic economy difference so we need to be smarter and negotiate.
Way to go Dougie
Canada's economy can't afford this dudes talk..
WTG Doug!
Stand up to BULLIES!??…DO ANY of you RESEARCH!??… I BELIEVE the WORLD was BULLYING the U.S. MARKET and NOW they're CRYING cuz it's NO MORE….PSHHH Stand up to BULLIES 🙄🤭
Enough you are making it worse 😂
Ford is terrible…..he has no real world experience.
Bravo Mr. Ford il faut faire voir à trumpe qu’il n’est pas Dieu et qu’il ne vaut pas un clou avec ses faillites et son AMOUR des dictateurs
Doug Ford gives Trump the expected reaction. Dougie… Trump is using protectionist tariffs to promote American industry in America. Does it hurt Canada? Yes. Do you need to scream and wail and try to punch back but instead punch yourself in the face? No. Pivot, Doug. Don't engage. You don't have the stones, chops, or cards to act like this.
This New Yorker says Good on you Canada.
Republicans aren’t standing up at all. The only ones standing up and saying no are Democrats. They just don’t have the majority. That’s the 77 million voters fault.
Trump says he doesn’t need anything from Canada 😎
So let’s cut back on electricity (or charge significantly more), same with potash, water, other rare minerals, oil, etc.
If that doesn’t get his attention, cut the power …PERIOD … Tuck Frump 🤬
Canada doesnt do business with Russia. So…….
GOOD.
Trump 🇺🇸
Drop your tarrifs on American milk, cheese, eggs, beef and chicken.
You started it with terrifies on our products. Remove all your terrifies on US goods so we can compete. Good going President Trump!
Stop talking Dougie
Ford should ignore Trump, this is exactly what he loves to see – a rattled politician.
Swampcommiehackfraudarat
This guy needs to run for PM
The US is going backwards while China is barrelling forward, Canada needs to get away from the US as much as possible and if that means playing hardball with the US commerce dept. etc, we have to be willing to sacrifice short term for long term gain. I hate politics!
Stand your ground!!!!
Do a surcharge on electricity and oil doug.
Trump will not negotiate with fanatic extreme leftist Canadians. We need PP to get somewhere with all this! Leftist everywhere are his enemies!
I disagree too. If you put higher tariffs on our exports, other than industry-protective ones, it will slow our trade. I do believe PM Carney is looking for other trade partners as he said. Slowing our exports down until we secure new partners seems counterproductive
