How Uber Uses AI To Charge You More
In the early days of its inception, Uber attracted consumers with the simple promise of a convenient ridesharing experience that was cheaper than traditional taxis. However, a significant transformation occurred under the surface when the company introduced up-front pricing—a shift from a straightforward calculation based primarily on distance and time to a more complex, algorithm-driven model. This strategic pivot allowed Uber to leverage a range of dynamic, real-time factors when determining fares and driver earnings.
As a result of this new pricing model, Uber’s charges have skyrocketed. Between 2018 and 2022, average fares in the United States surged by 83%, a staggering increase that far outpaces the national inflation rate. A notable experiment by Business Insider revealed just how volatile fares can be; when employees ordered the same UberX ride simultaneously, price variations exceeded 21% between the highest and lowest fares. Furthermore, a broader study by Consumer Reports uncovered even greater discrepancies in pricing across various routes, raising eyebrows and leading to accusations that Uber’s algorithm favors profit at the expense of its riders.
Critics argue that Uber’s use of artificial intelligence and sophisticated algorithms effectively allows it to exploit consumers while minimizing compensation for drivers. The company, however, firmly refutes these allegations. Uber points to external factors like escalating operational costs and a persistent post-pandemic driver shortage to justify the dramatic fare increases. But this explanation does little to allay concerns that riders are being charged excessively due to opaque pricing mechanisms.
So, how precisely does Uber determine what you will pay for a ride? The answer lies in its algorithmic pricing strategy, wherein real-time factors such as demand, traffic conditions, and even the rider’s location play critical roles. By analyzing vast amounts of data, Uber can adjust fares dynamically, optimizing for both rider pricing and driver incentives. The result is a pricing landscape where riders often find themselves grappling with inconsistent fares for the same journey.
Moreover, this up-front pricing model also significantly impacts drivers. While the algorithm sets fare rates, Uber’s “take rate”—the percentage of the fare that the company retains—further complicates the economics for drivers. Despite driving costs skyrocketing for consumers, many drivers report that their earnings remain stagnant, if not diminished. This discrepancy has led to growing dissatisfaction within the driver community, who feel squeezed by a system designed for profitability rather than fairness.
As Uber navigates an increasingly competitive and scrutinized market, the rise of algorithmic pricing is poised to shape its future. While the company cites legitimate concerns such as rising costs and market instability, the opaque nature of its fare-setting processes raises questions about fairness and transparency for consumers. In an era where cost of living continues to rise, understanding how Uber’s pricing algorithms work is crucial for riders looking to decipher the true cost of their journeys.

Try and remember that Ubers goal is to price traditional cabs and delivery services out of business, then everyone has little choice. I try to minimise my Uber use. In London, take a 4 mile journey to the gym that takes 30mins by bus and costs £1.75. Take an Uber for example. A minimum of 5 minutes to find a driver and the time it takes to get to you. Sometimes 10 minutes plus time taken to get you. Cost of ride £13.94. Let’s call it £14.00 you might get there later than the bus journey. The rule of thumb is decide when to use Uber and keep multiple accounts. If using the app on an Android phone, log out and delete the app data.
Another thing is IP address, which under EU and UK GDPR is personal data, and stored by Uber. I was in Portugal with a friend who showed me the difference in pricing if using a VPN.
Uber matches drivers with passengers. I made a complaint against a driver who picked me up. I complained he asked me to sit in the car whilst he used the toilet. Not an issue until I realised he did not start the journey in his app and I was charged waiting time. The customer support said they will ensure I’m not matched with that driver again. So I believe that it if can be done manually, then it can be done programmatically.
Anyone who works in the field of Data Science knows that data is collected and correlated with the purpose of profit.
Uber keeps easily 80% and us driver's 20% illegal immigrants out on the fields are making way more than us and also fast food places why doesn't the government shut them down unless Uber gives a cut under the table Uber are a bunch of crooked theifs and to mention which I know for a fact because 2 different riders clearly told me when I told them I'm getting a gut feeling Uber has illegal immigrants driving for them and those are the one's who's screwing us legal drivers on rides because they accept crumbs on the dollar so anyways these 2 riders confirmed to me that they both had illegal immigrants driving them and the driver's admitted to these rider's they have NO legal documents someone needs to put a stop to these theifs!😡😡😡😡
Lawsuit?
I think this is fine as long as Uber only takes its 20% cut and nothing more.
They steal tips too
Oh now I understand what Billionaires mean by "AI will bring Abundance" (for them) is the part they miss!
Uber owns the insurance company, so they’re effectively paying themselves. This creates a clear conflict of interest and is ethically wrong.
It’s illegal right? How can them charge more based on phone angles angry 😡.
If a service costs X dollars then charge X dollars.
The reasons Uber and other share ride companies for their pricing policies: 1. CEO cannot have enough private jets, mega yachts, summer homes, etc. 2. They have to pay their corporate lawyers and spin doctors to cover their tracks; and importantly 3. Y'all keep using them.
I dont drive for rhem anymore, its a scam and noth8ng for the drivers
Wie organisation . We are taking them to court. Google dynamic pay uk agains uber and join the claim.!!!
Stop USE THIS SCAMMERS.
PATHETIC. This must be legally punished.
I once tipped an Uber driver $100 because the five drivers before him all refused to take us on a short five-minute trip. Five idiots rejected the ride simply because the distance was too short.
Then the sixth driver accepted. He was an Aussie guy. Most Uber drivers around here are foreigners, so it was refreshing to have someone who just accepted the job instead of acting like a five-minute trip was beneath him.
I was drunk at the time, but my moral logic was perfectly clear: if you're willing to provide good service when everyone else couldn't be bothered, that massive tip is yours. He earned every dollar of it.
Uber should be fine for this prices fixing or price differences for the same ride.
how about mandatory tips demanded by drivers? I've been asked to tip a mandatory amount by the driver and asked to cancel the ride because I refused the mandatory tip
The Dutch Data Privacy Authority the other day gave Uber a fine of USD 966 million (€ 825 million) for having their algorithms fire drivers automatically. Would be good for the AVG to also investigate what algorithms Uber use for their upfront pricing.
Oh, gee, the "practically free taxi which isn't a taxi" turns out to be anything but cheap. Who would've thought.
Dutch regulator fines Uber $966 million for automatic (using algorithms) driver suspensions
We need more Luigis to thin out these C-Level ranks a bit.
Drivers are getting less than 7 years ago
Uber also makes it a pain in the ass for drivers to see what the passenger paid because they don't want drivers to see it and realize how much Uber took. They are complete scumbags.
It is wrong!
The cut which Uber is taking is minimum 50% and up to 75%
You can ask any driver in London.
Example?
I was offered to go from London Hertfordshire to Birmingham for £122
Afcourse I didn't accept, but i did check on riders app and it was 296£.
So that's not 50%!!!!
And I could give you thousands of examples!
Not worthy my time!
This is the most disgusting and modern time slavery company ever existing!!!!
I could never communicate with UBER. I sent a letter to their London office and another to Dara, addressed to the CEO. I never received any reply from UBER. Other drivers have had similar experiences. Thank you for doing this. I am certainly making less money driving for UBER now, and having seen their take, I feel less motivated. When UBER shows me their weekly fare breakdown (UK), it says, "…reflect the total amount you received for completing trips on UBER." Does that suggest that, for example, my 70% includes holiday pay and pension contributions? It would then be less than 70%.
Once a company has a monopoly the government has the right to control prices. A few countries already limit Ubers take rate to 20% and it’s working fine.
