Protests erupted in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem on Tuesday night after Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu announced the firing of Defence Minister Yoav Gallant. The decision came as a result of growing differences between the two leaders, particularly concerning the conscription of ultra-orthodox Jews to the Israeli army and efforts to retrieve hostages held by armed groups in Gaza.
Netanyahu cited a breakdown in trust as the reason for Gallant’s dismissal, stating that their attempts to reconcile their diverging strategies had been unsuccessful. Despite initially describing their relationship as “productive” during the early stages of the conflict with Hamas in Gaza, it became clear that their differences were irreconcilable.
The repercussions of Gallant’s sacking were immediately visible as hundreds of Israelis took to the streets in protest. The unrest highlighted the deep divisions within Israeli society and the government’s handling of critical issues.
As tensions continue to rise in the region, the future of Israel’s defence strategy remains uncertain. Netanyahu’s decision to dismiss Gallant has not only sparked public outrage but also raised questions about the stability and effectiveness of the country’s leadership during such turbulent times.
