Amputation without anesthetic – The painful history of surgery | DW Documentary
The history of surgery can be traced back to the Stone Age. Today, surgical methods have undergone countless revolutionary developments—and save innumerable lives every year.
Archaeological evidence shows that surgical procedures were already being performed in the Stone Age. In the Inca Empire and Ancient Egypt, skulls were also opened to remove foreign bodies or treat pain. Over the course of thousands of years, surgical methods have been revolutionized. From the first medical teachings and surgical experiments in ancient times to complex organ transplants and brain surgery, this has been a long road full of suffering, mistakes, and medical dead ends.
To solve the mystery of how the human body works and to be able to perform major operations, doctors had to overcome numerous obstacles and take great risks. Quite a few patients and doctors paid for the development of new treatment methods with their lives. With outstanding archive material and international interview partners, the film tells the story of surgery. A fascinating journey from ancient times to heart transplants and minimally invasive robot-assisted procedures.

Happened in Gaza for the past 2 years during the genocide
Well necessity truly is the mother of invention 🤙🏽🖤🧮
An interesting presentation!
Fascinating.
I dont see how surgery sans anaesthesia was done, as pain at a certain threshhold becomes a shock to the heart.
Great. Doco, woke up to this playing on tv & drew me in right away with such fascinating topic.
The Arabs sacked the great library of Alexandria, so no they were not the forefront of knowledge. They simply dominated a period.
I enjoyed this documentary very much..surgery has come a long way from these days..men and women throughout the years have led us to all the knowledge of present day…God Bless
Surely they could have used alcohol, and herbs like cloves to numb areas. Example at 5:01 it shows a alcohol decanter.
Operations take so much out of a person's body. That's why recovery is major part of survival!

Daily reality today in Gaza. Children have been undergoing limbs amputations because israel bombs them and blocks all medical aid from entering Gaza.
Omg, horrible
This is the horrific reality today in Palestine where they have to amputate without anesthesia because of Israel's genocide.
