As the trade war between Canada and the United States heats up, Canadians crossing the border may find themselves facing a new surtax on certain U.S. goods. The surtax, which amounts to 25 per cent in addition to regular duties and taxes, applies to a range of goods being brought into Canada.
These countermeasures are set to impact commercial shipments, goods imported by mail or courier, and goods brought in by individual travellers above their personal exemptions, according to the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA). The sudden implementation of these tariffs caught some cross-border shoppers off guard, as they were unaware of the new charges when trying to bring goods back into Canada.
With tensions rising between the two countries, it appears that Canadian shoppers will have to navigate higher costs and potential confusion when crossing the border. As the situation continues to evolve, it remains to be seen how this surtax will impact cross-border shopping and trade relations between Canada and the U.S.

Its gonna be a whole lot more than just a trade ware in a sec here
Dont be gaslighted by the MSM. Why dont the Canadian government gives its citizen voting to decide if they wanna join US?
Before it was true that groceries was cheaper in USA Even with curency, but not anymore and not since around 10 years…i travelled a lot in USA before, in many states, at least 30, and i did my groceries along the way in my weeks vacations…and i could see the changes…it’s not what it use to be, more expensive now, practicaly same prices then Canada when you change the Price with the curency value…so no savings there.
If you're a Canadian crossing the border to shop right now you can get effed; traitors.
Don’t blame Trump blame Trudeau and his corrupt government he supposed to secure the border and go after fentanyl. Bc drug labs
It’s so sad, now she’s not going to be able to shop for cheaper groceries in the US.
Im thinking the young woman in this article wasn’t very good in math or not really knowing her prices. $215 usd I’d over $300 cdn. Not all groceries are tax exempt. I was and always enjoyed cross border shopping . I live in Ontario and shopped a half dozen times a year in Port Huron. Always spending $5-600 usd. I like the variety of products available that are not in Canada. Probably at least the last 2 years I noticed prices were equal or more constantly reminding my wife that $3.99 usd for a pint of blueberries is the same I’d not more then $4.99 Cnd. Meat and vegetables were never a big deal . Butter was always a big buy for us , mainly because the convenience of 1/4s for same price of a brick here. If I were to but 1/4s here my $6 butter is $9. My last trip after Christmas was a shock returning , I didn’t get the yellow card to pull over to secondary but got a dressing down by the Canadian border guard. He said I could be paying $200 extra! That was before tariff threats then reality. Now I ask anyone with a sane mind would cross border shop.
I get it! She went to buy eggs!
These people r leaving canada to shop in america?? R they traitors?
Maybe shop in your own country.
I’m glad, this traitor has to follow the rules. Should have charged her more
When you cross border for survival why won't you be in 51st state and make a affordable living
Canadians dont need to buy USA. Buy Canadian, avoid border. 🇨🇦🍁
Is this shopper actually claiming that if NO tariff was applied, there would be real savings involved? The Canadian dollar is barely at .70 cents US. Once you factor in time, fuel, and the exchange rate, there is NO WAY the US buying trip should actually account for any worthwhile savings. If you shop wisely on THIS side of the border, and help to create more competition between Loblaw and their rivals, there should be very little incentive to shop in the US, even WITHOUT tariffs.
Good. Stop trying to save 10 bucks and support your local Canadian businesses.
Shop local! She is doing the opposite of aupporting the canadians! Now she is breaking the rules and complaing about it.
Good! Choosing to not support Canadian shouldn’t be a function of geographic location. If you’re buying American goods you owe the tariff. You’re taking advantage of that while those in northern areas can and won’t. Suck it up!
what a giant screw up.
Good, I'm glad. Stay at home and spend your money here. I never did think what these people do is right. Keep your money in canada, and then things can get cheaper. You boost the american economy, not the canadian economy.
No sympathy. Spend your money here, lady. Spending $1.40 for every U.S. buck, plus gas, can't be saving you that much, if any, money. Be thankful that you caught a break. The next time you won't be so lucky.
lol, Canada taxing their own citizens
