King Charles Expresses “Profound Sorrow” Over Britain’s Role in Slave Trade
During a poignant moment at a recent summit of Commonwealth leaders held in Antigua, King Charles III publicly expressed his “profound sorrow” regarding Britain’s historical role in the transatlantic slave trade. This declaration marks a significant acknowledgment from the British monarchy, reflecting a growing awareness of the lasting implications of colonial actions on the Caribbean and beyond.
The king elaborated on the enduring impact of the slave trade, stating that it “still casts a shadow” over the Caribbean islands. His remarks highlight not only the historical injustices but also the contemporary ramifications that continue to affect the region’s social and economic landscape. As many Caribbean nations remain part of the Commonwealth, Charles’ statement serves to foster a dialogue about reparative justice and reconciliation.
Attendees at the summit noted that the issue of historical injustices dominated discussions, indicating a shift in how Commonwealth nations are confronting their shared past. Several leaders emphasized the need for a collective response to address the lasting effects of slavery and colonialism, signaling a call for action that goes beyond mere acknowledgment.
The presence of Prime Minister Mark Carney at the meeting further underscored the importance of these conversations. As discussions progressed, leaders focused on potential pathways for healing and mutual understanding, emphasizing the necessity of solidarity among Commonwealth nations as they navigate these complex historical narratives.
King Charles’ remarks have generated a significant response from various sectors of society and have reignited discussions on the need for further dialogue regarding the legacy of slavery and colonialism. The summit in Antigua marks not just a moment of reflection but potentially a turning point for how historical grievances are addressed within the Commonwealth framework.

There goes Mark Carney working for his commonwealth and friends.
How come king charles iii or britain will not pay monetary reparations, just a sorry is enough ? That is a double standard.
Great Britain was the first country in the world to abolish slavery.
Thousands of British perished in the Atlantic fighting against the African slave traders.
Where is the accountability for the descendants of the Africans and Arabs who perpetrated slavery for centuries before the Europeans landed on Africa’s shores? And they still perpetrate it with no global condemnation nor disdain.
Where does the term “slave” come from? Ask your islamic neighbours.
This is a distraction by King Charles because big bad news is being revealed about " Prince Harry" and young girls. The slave trade and sexual abuse of women and girls go hand in hand. allegedly.
Climate is his goal which will make him and Brookfield millions more
He’s a Greasy Corrupt Criminal
If only Canada 🇨🇦 had Real Unbiased Journalism not the paid Off liberal propaganda machine that brainwashes its citizens…
Who cares. We stopped slavery decades ago. But our corrupt governments do NOTHING about it today!
NO financial reparations. The current people did NOT do this, so why should they pay!
Britain and America ENDED the slave trade. Charles is a traitorous king. Carney is a phony. Unfortunately, Global "news" keeps promoting this negative propaganda, aimed to make Vanadians hate themselves and open themselves for failure and conquest.
Then, why doesn’t he give all that fortune back that found its way into his treasury?
Stop with the performance. Do your damn jobs
Carney has only made progress in building up his and Brookfield shares and lining his Liberal buddies pockets with taxpayers money 💰
Charles should be proud they were one of the first countries that outlawed it. Almost all people groups enslaved others historically…
Who cares? Who captured and sold those slaves in the first place?? Their own people did
We ended slavery unlike everyone else, the king is a traitor anyways. What happened to no kings?
We should be proud, not ashamed
The media is lying to you
Oh give it up ffs , who sold them in the first place ?
Ya look into it because it was the people they lived with , you know there own country men out for a buck .
Slavery is still around in one form or another and will only be gone when no human is alive .
You know better now that it should not happen so learn from it , as a species we never seem to learn from pass mistakes even to this day .
The people who SOLD the slaves should pay the " reparations " or perhaps the people who owned the ships and slave markets. ( tiny hats )
Sure slavery was a dark chapter for the British. However, they were the last ones to engage in it and the first ones to abolish it. Nobody wants to talk about how the Muslims came into Ireland and other European nations, and took millions of people away to be their slaves. It still goes on to 7th degree in the Muslim world.. their treatment of slaves was far more brutal than any European nation ever did. Why don’t they go after them for reparations for what they did to the Europeans?
I wonder if the Arab countries whom had the largest longest running slave trade also feel bad?.
Historical records and scholarship note that the Arab-Muslim slave trade (including the trans-Saharan, Indian Ocean, and Red Sea routes) spanned over 1,300 years—from the 7th century through the mid-20th century—making it one of the longest-running slave trades in history
Duration: Lasted from roughly the 7th century until formal abolition in various nations through the 20th century (with places like Saudi Arabia and Yemen abolishing slavery in the 1960s
Look to the past history
And we are repeating it 🤬
Canada has been shameful with its recent UN votes when it comes to Cuba, Haiti, Venezuela… and calls for reparations. I’m so disappointed in the PM and Anita Anand.
who owned the ships? who sold them into slavery?
He needs to shut his mouth he's a bloody embarrassment to the country. He should never have been crowned.
How about the king pays reparations out the of his own pocket? Not really fair to expect taxes to go towards this nonsense
England tried to abolished slavery.
Communism on the world stai has opposition.
slave owners got reparations up until 2015
joke of a king
This is pathetic. My God Boomers. The weakness is just unbearable at this point.
Please get out of the way.
Why would the King apologize for British's role in slavery. It was the British who fought to end it.
They were the ones who ended the slave trade nothing to apologize for
I could care less how he feels! My ancestors have suffered and died!!
If hell exists, I hope he'll be going there.
King Charles was bought to Canadian parliament May 27th 2025 to state Canada is "unceded territory". Government had no legal right to tax or rule over us.
Why do people apologize for things that happened long before they were even born?
Will they return wealth stolen from the colonies??
So if they got reperations would they spread it evenly.
So then The Bank of Canada should be paying their fare share as they made money off plantasions
Africa did not practise CHATTEL slavery…that version was done by Europeans…African “ slaves” were prisoners of war , debt surety etc….they were absorbed into the conquerer’s tribe, could marry etc…..🇯🇲
Charles backs the liberals taxing the canadian people so hard that we are basically slaves!
Sorrow is not enough – King should repay reparation to all countries they enslaved and robbed.
Britain and Europes Kings, Royal families should forfeit all of their royalty and riches!
When will you apologize for the MILLIONS of European ORPHANS that were sold into Indentured Slavery and shipped across the colonies?! More than 5 MILLION Canadians alone are the descendants of the “British Home Children”. Where are our reparations?!
Always with the welfare requests.
I think this topic has been expropriated since the 1960s to justify undue favourable treatment of Blacks because the Trade ended in the 1700s or so for Canada, USA and the UK. It’s been used as a form of modern psychological manipulation and emotional blackmail to distract from current socially irresponsible behaviour.
