The 2025 Spirit Award nominations were announced Wednesday morning, with Neon’s “Anora” and A24’s “I Saw the TV Glow” leading the film categories with six nods apiece. In the TV races, FX/Hulu’s “Shogun” led the way with five nominations, followed closely by Netflix’s “Baby Reindeer” and FX/Hulu’s “English Teacher.”
Sean Baker’s “Anora,” a wild comedy about a sex worker and a Russian oligarch’s son, received nods for best feature, director, lead performance for Mikey Madison, supporting performances for Yura Borisov and Karren Karagulian. Jane Schoenbrun’s “I Saw the TV Glow,” a coming-of-age drama with transgender themes, is also up for best feature, director, screenplay, lead performance for Justice Smith and supporting performance for Brigette Lundy-Paine. The best feature race also includes “Nickel Boys,” “Sing Sing” and “The Substance.”
On the TV side, the Japanese historical drama “Shogun” is up for best new scripted series, lead performances from Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai, supporting performances for Tadanobu Asano and Moeka Hoshi.
The Spirit Awards recognize the top movies released this year that were made for less than $30 million. Additionally, the John Cassavetes Award goes to a feature that was made for less than $1 million. The award show also honors TV shows that have aired for one season.
“Saturday Night Live” alum Aidy Bryant will host the award show for the second year in a row. The 40th annual show will take place on Feb. 22, 2025, and will be streamed live on the IMDb and Film Independent YouTube channels.
