Strong winds and critically low humidity have prompted widespread weather warnings across Texas and neighboring states, as forecasters caution residents about extreme fire danger and hazardous travel conditions.
The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued multiple Red Flag Warnings and Fire Weather Watches spanning the Texas Panhandle, South Plains, Rolling Plains, and parts of western North Texas.
Wind gusts exceeding 50 mph in some regions, combined with relative humidity values dropping into the single digits, have created what meteorologists describe as a volatile environment for rapid wildfire growth.
According to the NWS office in Amarillo, a Red Flag Warning remains in effect from late Wednesday morning through the evening for the Texas and Oklahoma Panhandles. Forecasters expect southwest winds between 25 and 35 mph, with gusts reaching up to 55 mph. Relative humidity could fall as low as 8 percent.
“A combination of strong winds, low relative humidity, and warm temperatures will create favorable weather for rapid fire growth and spread,” the National Weather Service warned in its advisory. Officials strongly discouraged outdoor burning and any activities that could generate sparks.
Similar conditions are forecast farther south. The NWS office in Lubbock reported southwest winds of 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 40 mph across the far southern Texas Panhandle and South Plains. Humidity levels are expected to dip near 10 percent. A Fire Weather Watch has also been posted for Thursday, signaling the potential continuation of critical conditions.
The dangerous winds have already led to at least one dramatic incident. Jordan Hall, a weather observer, captured video of a semi-truck flipping south of Dumas, Texas, amid powerful gusts. “Captured this semi flipping with @BlakeBrownWx south of Dumas, TX,” Hall posted on social media, underscoring the severity of the wind event. High-profile vehicles, including tractor-trailers and recreational vehicles, remain especially vulnerable in crosswind conditions.
Beyond Texas, similar Red Flag Warnings have been issued across Oklahoma, New Mexico, Colorado, and Kansas, illustrating the regional scale of the weather system. In western Oklahoma and western North Texas, winds are forecast between 15 and 25 mph with gusts up to 40 mph, while humidity levels could fall as low as 10 percent.
