Thousands of people gathered in Syria after the first Friday prayers in Latika following the rebels taking control of the capital. This rally comes after Syria’s new prime minister, Mohammed al-Bashir, promised religious freedom and called on millions of refugees to return home to help rebuild the country.
In an appeal to Syrians overseas, Bashir emphasized that Syria is now a free country that has regained its pride and dignity. He urged all Syrians to come back and assist in the country’s reconstruction, stating that their return would allow Syria to flourish once again. The United Nations estimates that there are approximately 6.4 million Syrian refugees worldwide.
The rebels, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), who ousted former president Bashar al-Assad, have also encouraged people to return to work. In a bold move, rebels set fire to the tomb of Hafez al-Assad, the father of Bashar and the previous ruler of the country, in the Assads’ hometown of Qardaha.
The rally in Latika and the prime minister’s call for the return of refugees mark a pivotal moment in Syria’s history as the country attempts to rebuild and move forward after years of conflict. The atmosphere at the rally was filled with hope and determination as Syrians came together to support their country’s new direction.
As Syria embarks on this new chapter, the resilience and unity of its people will be crucial in shaping the future of the country. The promise of religious freedom and the call for refugees to return signal a positive step towards reconciliation and reconstruction in Syria.
