Voepass ATR 72 Crashes Near Sao Paulo Killing 62 Onboard

On 9th August, a Voepass ATR 72 turboprop with 62 people on board crashed near Sao Paulo in Brazil. The local authorities have confirmed no survivors from the crash.

The ATR 72 -500 with registration PS-VPB was operating flight 2Z2283 from Cascavel to Sao Paulo Guarulhos, with 58 passengers and four crew members on board.

However, when the turboprop was in the initial approach at FL170, the aircraft spun out of control and crashed into a residential area on approach to Sao Paulo. ADSB data from Voepass Flight 2283 also indicates a steep descent from 17,000 feet.

As reported by the Aviation Herald, the aircraft came down in Villa Santa Fe, about 7nm southeast of Viracopos Airport and about 40nm northwest of Guarulhos Airport. The aircraft broke into several parts and burst into flames.

Footage shared on the internet shows the aircraft in a fully developed spin with little to no forward speed before it impacted a residential area and burst into flames.

In a memo, the airline confirmed the accident and stated that there were 62 people on board, 58 passengers and 4 crew members.

“VOEPASS has taken all measures to support those involved. There is still no confirmation of how the accident occurred or the current situation of the people on board.”

The turboprop involved in the incident is a 14.3-year-old ATR 72-500, delivered to Belle Air in June 2010. It later entered service with Voepass on June 28, 2023.

Emergency services are currently on the scene at the crash site, as investigations are ongoing.

Despite crashing near a residential area, local authorities reported no injuries on the ground.
