7 Canadian Inmates Too Dangerous for Maximum Security
Just forty-five minutes north of Montreal sits Sainte-Anne-des-Plaines. On paper, it looks like any quiet Quebec town. But on its outskirts lies the Special Handling Unit, the SHU. It is the absolute end of the line in the Canadian prison system. Only one exists in the entire country. You don’t get sent to the SHU for what you did on the street. You get sent here because maximum-security prisons, places like Millhaven or Kent, looked at you and decided you were too dangerous to control. Every man inside has killed behind bars, taken hostages, or posed an extreme threat to life. Because Canada abolished the death penalty in nineteen-seventy-six, there is no execution chamber waiting. When a killer is too toxic for maximum security, the system has nowhere left to send them. Despite legal reforms promising better conditions, the reality inside remains stark, isolated, and unforgiving. These are seven men from that world, the most dangerous inmates in Canadian history, and the shocking stories of what the absolute end of the line looks like.
