Independent 20th Century, the art fair dedicated to spotlighting art made between 1900 and 2000, has named the 30 exhibitors that will participate in its upcoming fourth edition, scheduled to run September 4–7 at Casa Cipriani in the Battery Maritime Building.
The majority of the fair will focus on single-artist presentations, primarily by spotlighting underknown figures active during the 20th century. Nahmad Contemporary and Skarstedt Gallery will collaborate on a booth for French modernist Georges Rouault, while Addison Rowe Gallery of Santa Fe will survey American modernist Raymond Jonson. Rosenberg & Co. will focus on abstractionist Gertrude Greene’s output during the 1940s in painting, collage, and more.
From the postwar era, Galerie Lelong will focus on the abstract “cosmovision” paintings from the 1960s and ’70s by Italian-born artist Elda Cerrato, who would split her time between Buenos Aires and Caracas,while Galerie Gmurzynska will show Dan Basen, who was active in New York’s avant-garde during the 1960s. Los Angeles–based Sea View will look at the paintings of Bruce Richards from the 1980s and ’90s made in response to the AIDS crisis.
Running alongside the much-larger Armory Show at the Javits Center, Independent 20th Century will also include a number of presentations of well-known figures, like a two-artist booth for Picasso and Munch at John Szoke Gallery, as well as Judy Pfaff at Cristin Tierney Gallery, Ilya and Emilia Kabakov at Galerie Brigitte Schenk, and Leonor Fini at Weinstein Gallery.
The fair will also feature presentations dedicated to self-taught artists, including Balraj Khanna, who was born in India and active in London in the 1980s and ’90s, at Jhaveri Contemporary; Afro-Brazilian artist Odoteres Ricardo de Ozias at Galeria Danielian; and the collective of African American artists known as the Florida Highwaymen at London’s Jeremy Scholar.
