Tragic Loss in Bella Coola: Mother and Daughter Victims of Suspected Grizzly Bear Attack
In a shocking incident that has left a community reeling, a mother and her daughter have been identified as the victims of a suspected grizzly bear attack in the remote town of Bella Coola, British Columbia. The unsettling events unfolded earlier this week when the BC Conservation Officer Service confirmed the discovery of remains in the Snooka West Trail area, a location known for its stunning wildlife and scenic vistas.
The tragedy began on Monday when authorities found one of the victims’ remains, sparking an extensive search operation. By Tuesday afternoon, the efforts of conservation officers and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) led to the grim discovery of the second set of remains. The victims have since been identified as Jenny Balcarras and her young daughter, Selah Reed, through a GoFundMe page established by a family member. The fundraiser highlights that Balcarras had recently moved to Bella Coola in hopes of starting a new career and embracing a fresh chapter in her life.
The bear attack has sent shockwaves through Bella Coola, a community that typically enjoys a close relationship with its surrounding wilderness. The loss has prompted an outpouring of grief and support for the family as residents come to terms with this devastating incident. Local authorities are now investigating the attack, emphasizing the importance of safety in the presence of wildlife, particularly in regions where human activity intersects with the natural habitat of large predators.
As the investigation continues, the community is left to mourn two lives that were tragically cut short, reflecting on the fragility of life and the unpredictability of encounters with wildlife in British Columbia’s vast wilderness.

im sorry.
if a bear got me id like the bear to live
Im sorry..why are people adventuring into bear habitat again? How is the bear to be blamed for existing?
Horrible 😢
Too bad they didn't have bear spray, you can buy it at Canadian Tire. Also, don't go where the grizzlies are. Black bears are chickens, they run away when you yell "GO AWAY!"
I grew up in bear country. Honestly, probably, one or both were menstruating. Not the bears fault. Just, not well timmed.
I’m from Bella Coola, the Central Coast has some of the densest Grizzly populations on earth. We never had these issues 30-40 years ago. The human population hasn’t grown much. The Bear population has, and it’s pushed into the lower valley. There’s no easy answers, it’s time to ask some hard questions and how to keep people safe.
Dissapents.
Deepest condolences to the family of the victims
As a parent, I would not bring my child to a place where there are predators lurking in the woods.
why do people go into the woods without protection ,, why dos the government make it harder to impossible for people to take care of themselves in bear country or deep wild country like in saskatcjhewan last year bear spray isnt enough
This is very sad my sincere condolences to the family and loved ones of these 2 young women who did nothing wrong .
People have to be more bear savvy or stay out of these areas…people dont have to be there..if you go be PREPARED….
😢
Bear spray will have little effect on a charging grizzly. 12/gauge is the best line of defense. And even then there are no guarantees, these bears are great hunters.
Humans, leave the bears alone, stay in your protected urban areas.
Enuff is enuff ..
Armed Bear Monitors close to all communities where the Killer bears ..are found …
BEAR Monitors and 12 Gauges …
And no more deaths ..😮
Definitely a Diggs! This relationship is doomed but at least Cardi loves her child and is the opposite of Killuh Clancy…"Love conquers all"
How sad.condolences to the family.
Capture the bear why? What led to the "attack"??? Evedintuary and factually I mean.
Grizzly r not turning into endangered species anytime soon in BC we should lower their numbers they will not go extinct
Stop over hyping this. Grizzly bears have THE AUTHORITY to ne wherever they are. They dont live by rules. Families tell the news tis
Sad, they chose the bear. For those who know
Hiking in a remote forest area, Why did they not bring Bear Spray?? Sad lesson learned…
horrible news! This should be reminder that this is not the time to venture into Grizzly country. They are getting ready to bed down for winter, and fattening up enough to survive. Everything is a threat to them right now. Be careful out there! This is so sad..
Came here just to verify assumptions. I was correct.
Stop trying to preserve the Grizzlies populations. They are not endangered.
People think they're domesticated animals and that they are trained to leave people alone in public campsites.
I'm in the bush with my 30-06 high powered rifle…. and I'm afraid of grizzlies.
I don't even count on my gun to save me….I avoid them and stay far away.
I stood on the train tracks. Eventually a train came and hit me.
Outlaw trains.
Leave the animals alone. They are trying to survive. Stay out
Sad, completely tragic loss.
Deepest Condolences to Family. And…we must go further to prevent anymore of this.
So how many People need to die or be permanently disfigured and Traumatized to re-think the whole EGOTISTICAL "We have lived in Peace alongside Grizzlies for thousands of years" ideology.
Clearly you dont. And have you?
Public inquiry as to how many actual attacks/Maulings/death's have occured in that area in the last thousands of years.
Russia, Ural Mountains, a bear attacked a snowboarder in the mountains in 2026; protective gear and a smartphone saved him. Interview and reconstruction. CpCKadvaVDw
PS: There are approximately 300,000 brown bears in Russia; each year, about 300 bear attacks to humans are officially recorded, and about 30 people die each year as a result of brown bear attacks.
Super sad. They look like best friends. Rip
