Fleeing war in Gaza – for a new life in Egypt? | DW Documentary
Tens of thousands of people have fled to Egypt to escape the war in Gaza. There they seek to start a new life and put the traumas of war behind them. They hope for peace but also fear for those who are still in Gaza.
14-year-old Moataz Al-Sabaawy is one of at least 100,000 Gazans who have found refuge in Egypt since the start of the war. He has been living in Cairo with his parents and sister since May 2024. His two older brothers were both killed in Gaza in an Israeli attack on the family home. The death of his brothers and his experience of the war have traumatized him. Like all the refugees, Moataz keeps in regular contact with family and friends in Gaza. Every time he calls home, he dreads hearing about the death of another loved one.
Bassem Medhat Abu Al-Aoun owned two restaurants in Gaza, one of which was near the Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City in the north of the Strip. Both restaurants have been destroyed in the war. He managed to escape to Egypt with over 50 members of his family. Escape is not an option for most Gazans. No one can leave the territory without the permission of the Israeli and the Egyptian authorities. Often, the border is sealed off completely. Those wanting to leave need a humanitarian visa, which is issued by international embassies. But Egyptian journalists say there is an alternative route out: It involves paying Egyptian brokers to “coordinate” the departure. The fee is several thousand US dollars per person. Abu Al-Aoun has now opened a new restaurant in Cairo. But he worries about what the future holds.
Meanwhile Israa Ali from Egypt has founded an initiative together with her husband and friends that aims to help the refugees. It’s called “Olives Grandsons”. The organization has over 100 volunteers looking after traumatized children from Gaza. Art therapy, sport and singing help alleviate the children’s fears and trauma. The charity also offers lessons based on the Palestinian curriculum, as most families hope one day to be able to return to Gaza.

A day will come when everyone will say that they opposed the genocide all along. But some of us will remember the spineless enablers who, rather than holding power to account, kissed its feet. And that includes Deutsche Welle.
The documentary Impact is what impressed me most this summer.
Israel only now controls the Egypt crossing. Less than 3 months of control. Also, if 100,000 people is a tiny fraction of the population, what is 40,000 deaths then? A small or big toll? Make up your minds…
DW quietly took down its film "Two kids a day" which documents the outrage that more than 700 Palestinian children and young people were arrested every year by the Israeli army (before October 2023). It provides evidence of emotional and physical abuse of Palestinian kids by Israel. To repeat: CHILDREN. The film was uploaded on 18th Sept 2023 and quietly removed after the 7th October.
Coming back to their ancestral land, beautiful.
Thank you for a great documentary and reporting.
As for the hasbara propaganda and talking points in the comment section, I hope your comments never get deleted, as you look at them in shame in the near future. These comments will not age well. Rest assured, history will judge you.
@dwreporting
Thank you so much for this “unbiased reporting” that failed to mention Hamas not even once !! ❤
Thank you to the German reporters : Mohamed Khalil, Menam Sami, Abdullah Mostafa, Mostafa Hanafy!! ❤
Absolutely amazing to see the children, heartbreaking but amazing. I ham happy that at least a small fraction get to be children. I hope more will
Thamk you DW
Consider making a documentary about the farm murders in South Africa, they don't even make the news anymore.
Im confused. I thought Gaza was a prison, why do they miss and want to live in a prison? Why do they call a prison their home? The media needs to get their narrative in order
All this suffering because of Hitler's unfinished business
Isn't it Germany the one who is complicit in this war?🤔🥱
I have so much love for the Palestinians. Unfortunately I'm in the country that is financially supporting the other team. My heart and doors are always open for the people of Gaza. I would be more than willing to bring a family into my home
So only people with money are allowed to flee Gaza? Why can't Egypt offer more people temporary refuge until this terrible war is over and people can return?
Unless something changes fundamentally, the system we are living in, there will be no peace
I wonder if they feel that it was worth electing a terrorist organization as their government that sanctioned the mass killing of innocent people, real life choices have real life consequences, I sympathize with this people, and I am astounded that a people time and time again after losing so much refuse to take back their country and control their futures for their children, instead of resorting to a terrorist organization
All of them forgot to tell thanks to Ha*mas 🤣…
Israel left the Gaza strip to the people of Gaza in 2005 because of Western promises to Israel that they should try the two state solution..
Well…Israel left Gaza. Hamas / islamists took over rapidly!
This experiment (seeing of Gazans can govern themselves instead of making wars) have failed dramatically showing the world that they cannot be trusted.
We can choose to put the blame on Israel because of very narrow eyes (falling into the victimhood of Gazans) or we can choose to understand that Gazans chose the path of war (October 7th massacre was Gazans choice and understand the situation )
I have a question if we have so much going on in our country the great usa ppl suffering hunger poorness our native americans and so many more ethic ppl why do people want us to worry about whats goin on in the other side of the world i dont get it let them deal with there own stuff and we should do the same
Live in Egypt, find work, start a family, and learn to live with people of other faiths.
History is judging you Israel.
I have pity for the innocent. I have no pity for Palestinian and Arab men who see their women and children as cannon fodder and Cattle.
Supported humas and then consequences came and cry
There have been many groups of people and tribes who lived on this planet and are now gone. Is it possible its just Palestine's turn? They have a failing society an ideology that's not serving them in the 21st century and no means of survival other than what they are given. Perhaps it is their turn to fade in the history. This is not a desire or wish. It just is.
Thanks once again to DW❤
Hamas is to be blamed for this.shame on hamas
I thought they supported hamas?? Oh well
Fleeing the war they started??? But according to you people, the children of Israel do not matter… Shame on you for supporting terrorism!
Since Gazans were given a chance to self govern in 2005 but chose war and the destruction of their neighbors.
I am sad for them but I cannot have pity for them as they “played” and lost.
They can play the victims (again) for uneducated westerners who know little and for journalists (so eager to dramatize a situation that they indirectly encourage themselves)
Truth is that Gazans voted Hamas that declared to “destroy Israel” in 2005.
I wonder why all the countries around Gaza dont want any Palestinian refugees 🤔 hmmm
Please make a documentary about mexican cartels and funkytown gore
There is a reason why Egypt does not want anything to do with Palestinians.
All the people who screamed propaganda on the Israel documentary will be quiet now. Why are you so biased?
