With the incredible success of pharmaceutical company Novo Nordisk, Denmark has seen a surge in economic prosperity. However, as correspondent Jon Wertheim explores in this insightful video, there may be a “Nokia risk” lurking on the horizon.
Looking back at the downfall of former mobile giant Nokia, we are reminded of the dangers of becoming too reliant on one industry or company for economic stability. Just like Nokia was once a powerhouse in the mobile phone industry before falling from grace, could Novo Nordisk face a similar fate for Denmark?
As Denmark celebrates the success of Novo Nordisk, it is important to consider the potential risks that come with such dominance in one sector. Will Denmark diversify its economy to avoid the pitfalls of a “Nokia risk,” or will it continue to ride the wave of Novo Nordisk’s success?
This video provides a fascinating look at the complexities of economic development and the challenges that come with it. As Denmark navigates its future, the lessons from Nokia serve as a cautionary tale for what could happen if the country does not take proactive steps to mitigate potential risks.

Release the Kamala Harris transcripts. What is in them that they are hiding?
the product does not work all my friends tried it all still fat ..😊
yes today is very very cold , so i dont bath.
We are witnessing the death spiral of global gangster capitalism right now, and what you see here is just one of the many symptoms.
Overcharging like crazy for this dumb drug is nothing to be proud of.
That is how it works, they have the rights for the drug for 20 years. Just like viagra and when Pfizer made Zoloft they became rich. The Nokia-view is not really the same as Novo has been huge in pharmaceuticals for many years – also other things than for diabetes.
Bad idea putting all your eggs in one basket so it's lucky they have Maersk shipping, Lego and Carlsberg breweries as well.
novo nodisk is another story than Nokia. People don't always need cellphone, but they are always in demand of medication. Besides the ozempic, novo has many other products in their pipelines.
How do I buy stocks from this business
They already have data calculating gdp without including novonordisk.
It’s like asking what happens to the USA without the magnificent seven
The Danish economy used to be boosted by North Sea oil, but we emptied the reserves, so Ozempic came at a convenient time.
To compare gdp with market cap is stupid. It is like comparing the income of a familly with the value of their house.
There are serious risks – competitors will come and the risk of scare cases from side effects are probably the two biggest. Let’s hope for positive but they need to plan for the worst also, both Novo and DK government
Unfortunate the government prioritizes no growth generating welfare spending over decreasing taxes for future growth.
Denmark could reach a GDP per capita equal to Switzerland which is 54% higher, but most of the public debate is centered around increasing salaries for civil servants, social benefits and green transition. Not about business, R&D and increasing growth.
A Top CEO with a really broken English….
Silly comparison, the two companies are so far apart in every aspect.
lol Denmark isin't putting all eggs in one basket. There are a lot of different industries diversifying the economic portfolio of the country. Just because one sector is outperforming others, that doesn't mean that others aren't doing well.
They driving the danish economy? .. thats why wegovy cost 3x more in danmark than Germany for example? 😉 1300dkr vs. 400dkr 😉
As long as people eat junk all day long for life and want texhfixes for their problems, then there's less of a risk it will be Denmarks Nokia.
What a silly silly report. It’s like asking what happens to the USA without the magnificent seven lol
Cell phones are fast moving consumer goods. Pharmaceuticals are a necessity, people need and by independent of their income.
People get sick every day, but do not need a new cell phone every day.
It's not like Novo transformed our economy – but I've gotta admit: Having electric lights is quite handy …
It's an odd angle.
Bring back the NOKIA! Great little Phone
but also can i just say
theres gonna be people always who says prioritize other things
because in case the windfall continues longer, or somethings else
that is just fallacies and lies to say such things
because doing the points 1+2 1st is universally best things to do
and regardless of how ozempic drug if it continues any longer
doesnt matter! or to present as a harm would be a fake politics lies
because then worst cases, you already paid off and locked in
those 1. national debts and 2. green transitions 1st, oh no! how bad
that was risky bad malpractice things = no it wasnt
to want future sucesses for the politicians to say due to their plans
because when people disagrees etc for their own superiority complex
and the self interest things, its a part of the human nature
you plan its a 1 time things, and make most robust resilliant plan
against future known catastrophies, that is certainly known (for sure)
so just do maximum the 1 + 2 things please, and invest in children
give your future peoples (not born yet) a real pension, and a future
Completely have no clue ❤❤❤
Novo Nordisk is certainly helpful to the Danish economy but please don't talk about 'trickle down'! The concept is abused to make people accept inequality in society. This is very lucrative to the rich, I wonder is 60 Minutes owned by the rich?
The most helpful effect of Novo Nordisk is taxes, company taxes and taxes paid by the many scientists with high salaries. The tax money allows Denmark to be e.g. in front in the struggle for freedom and democracy, no country donate so much to Ukraine compared to the number of citizens.
These Novo Nordisk scientists repeatedly produces cash cows to the company. When Wegovy and Ozempic begin to fade they may have something new, Nokia only had telephones. Though nothing may beat Wegovy as obesity is a natural thing in a society with the structure of the US.
I like Novo nordisk 🇩🇰🇺🇦🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🌞
yet another video that doesnt answer its own title question
Technology and drugs is far from the same: Technology can easily be replaced/outperformed whereas drugs have 10 year patents. Additionally, Novo Nordisk is NOT a big part of the Danish economy (a company’s market value has no bearing on its contribution to GDP). Even w/o NN, Denmark would be unbelievably rich from other sources.
E.g. The risk to Saudi Arabia’s economy regarding oil til MUCH greater.
wtf happened with the audio half way through! lol!
Novo Nordisk has been on the forefront of diabetes research and innovation for over a hundred years. That's not suddenly coming to an end.
Finland seem to be doing ok without Nokia. They should have bought Apple though. They also had a big paper industry which the iPad outcompeted
I’d be more inclined to study the differences between say NN and Purdue.
NN funnels the majority of its profits into a long standing philanthropic foundation, which is now the biggest endowed charitable organisation on the planet, while US pharma does everything to minimise tax and tries to claim that its massive direct marketing is R&D costs…
NN pays its taxes and then distributes its profits as dividends – but 35 years ago the family which controlled the now 100 yo company set up a foundation and vested most of the shares in that foundation.
Thats not socialism, but it sure is a different kind of capitalism to what’s seen everywhere these days.
A bit sad that a pharmaceutical company is our biggest company. Would rather be known for something positive and ethical.
We don't feel any real wealth advancement living in Denmark because of NN's success. They have had power and influence before the success of the drug was introduced. They have not supported the welfare state.
