A powerful winter storm is sweeping across the Upper Midwest, triggering a fresh snowstorm warning for Minnesota and Wisconsin. Forecasters are urging residents to prepare for treacherous conditions through the weekend.
The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Winter Storm Warning effective from Friday evening through late Saturday, with some areas expecting up to 12 inches of heavy, wet snow, especially in the northern and central parts of both states. Wind gusts reaching 35 to 45 mph are also expected, significantly reducing visibility and increasing the risk of power outages.
“Travel will be very difficult to impossible at times,” said NWS meteorologist Tyler Hasenstein in a public alert. “The combination of snow and gusty winds will create whiteout conditions and drifting snow, especially on open highways.”
Key Impacted Areas
- Minneapolis–St. Paul metro area: Expected snow accumulation of 6–8 inches with mixed precipitation.
- Duluth, MN: Heavy snow of up to 12 inches and strong winds, especially along the North Shore.
- Eau Claire and Wausau, WI: Could receive 6–10 inches with significant ice accumulation in some areas.
- Rural roads and interstates: Will be especially hazardous due to blowing and drifting snow.
Emergency Measures in Place
Local authorities in both states have prepped snowplow fleets and are advising against non-essential travel. Wisconsin DOT spokesperson Carla Benson emphasized: “We’re asking people to stay off the roads if they can. Let our crews do their job safely.”
Emergency shelters have been activated in Rochester, MN, and Green Bay, WI, for those in need of warmth and assistance during the storm.
Looking Ahead
While the storm is expected to taper off by Sunday morning, temperatures will plunge afterward, leading to ice hazards on untreated surfaces. Meteorologists are also tracking another system for midweek, which could bring additional snow to the region.
Forecasters recommend stocking up on essentials, charging devices, and checking on elderly neighbors. Residents are encouraged to monitor…
