2 Chainz doesn’t plan on leaving the underground indie scene anytime soon. After shooting over to the West Coast to team up with Larry June and The Alchemist for the stellar Life Is Beautiful project, he’s planning on releasing a joint album with East Coast producer Statik Selektah.
Over the weekend, Statik posted a screenshot of the NFR Podcast announcing the upcoming album’s “known features,” which included the likes of Lil Wayne, Westside Gunn, Larry June, Mary J. Blige and CeeLo Green. And according to him, there are “way more features” and it’s “about time” that the album finally sees the light of day.
Back in 2023, while sitting down with Hot 97’s Ebro in the Morning, Statik gave the project heavy praise by likening it to Jay-Z‘s debut album Reasonable Doubt. “Our album is [done]. It’s in my phone right here,” he said. “We brought it to heights that are like ridiculous. This is his Reasonable Doubt. I just can’t wait for people to hear it. It’s coming.”
In October of 2024, while in Abu Dhabi, 2 Chainz announced that he wasn’t resigning with Def Jam and instead choosing to become a free agent. “I wanna make a huge announcement,” he said while taking a break from shooting hoops. “Starting last week, I am now an independent artist. That’s right, I’m not re-signing with Def Jam. So, think of it like KD or like LeBron — the biggest free agent in the game.”
He added, “Better come on, these folks talking about oil money down here. You better come with your bag, Jack.”
Chainz and Statik go back to 2016, when they released the loosie “Smoke Break,” and have collaborated on a handful of songs since then.
