Syrian rebels close in on Damascus as presidency denies Assad has left capital

Syrian rebels are rapidly advancing towards Damascus, with reports indicating that they are closing in on the city from both the north and south, as well as already entering the key city of Homs. These developments have raised concerns about the safety of the capital, particularly as the Syrian presidency has denied rumours that President Bashar al-Assad has fled Damascus.

The leader of the Islamist militant group HTS has stated that their ultimate goal is the overthrow of Assad’s regime, adding further tension to the already volatile situation in the region. In a symbolic gesture of defiance against the president, protesters have taken down the statue of Assad’s father in the suburb of Jermana, just 10km from Damascus.

These events mark a significant turning point in the Syrian conflict, with rebels making significant gains in their fight against Assad’s government. As the rebels inch closer to Damascus, the stability of the capital hangs in the balance.
